SUICIDE IN GERMANY.
A curious series of statistics has been
published' in Berlin, showing that the
number of suicides committed in Ger-
many from 1881 to 1893, inclusive, was
105,327. The totals range, from 8,087
in 1881 to 10,699 in 1893. The rate per
head of the population was as high as
46 per 100,000 in Saxe-Aitenberg, and
as low as 13 and 111-2 per 100,000 in
Bavaria and Alsace-Lorraine. The sui-
cides are proportionately more numerous
in the Prussian army than in any part
of the empire, having been 65 per 100,-
000 in.1893.

TILE CRIMINAL CODE.
Mr. Dicker introduced a bill to
amend the criminal code.. He explain-
ed that it was proposed to prohibit
the manutat:iure and ,transmission of
obscene books. At present the prohi-
bition extends only to the sale. 1t
was intended to extend thep enalties
for' the seduction of girls in factories
to shops and departmental stores, which
laatter had grown up since the clause
vas firs(; enacted. It was proposed to
remove the anomaly in the present law
under which while betting during a
race meeting was made legal, the booth
wherein it was carried on was illegal.'
Another provision was designed to
meet th ecomplaint that in some sections
of the country racing took place contin-

summer. Roughly speaking, the period
for rasing is 20 days—Len days in the
spring and ten days in the fall. neves

art enterprises, that point having been
strongly pressed upon the attention of
Parliament. It was putt in against the
judgment of a great many members,
who thought it was liable to abuse.
That anticipation had been realized—
the exception had been abused. After
trying the best he could to make some
provision that would allow. legitimate

and he therefore proposed the repeal
of the sub -section. • Anotther •• amend-

larceny. It was proposed to recognize
the branding of cattle in the North-

His heart was affected.

commenced to flutter violently, and 1 was
warned that even ordinary exercise en-

Sarsaparilla I feel better than I ever ex-
pected to feel, for I can now address a
meeting without effort, can walk a brisk
pace for two hours or more without ex-
haustion and am free front that distressing
palpitation, In my work I have often -
time recommended Scott's Sarsaparilla,
and have seen many cases where its
