Charles MeDonald, whose design for
a. bridge over the Hudson River, be-
tween New York and Jersey City, has

that of the longest existing span.
The Rev. Joseph Cook, the famous
Boston Congregationalist, who recent-
ly returned front Australia and Japan,
is at the sanitarium, Clifton Springs,
suffering from an acute form of
nervous prostration. He is nearly
blind, owing to a weakness of the
optic nerve.
A young man in Liston el, Mass.,
troubled for years with a constant suc-
cession of boils on his neck, was com-

Mrs. Albert Allen, living four miles
north of Goblesville, 'Mich., on Sunday
went to the barn to gather eggs, and

evidently froze to death. Bulland had
been an inmate of the Kalamazoo
asylton, but was released about
years ago. He had been living in
Otsego, and the first iutimation was
the finding of his dead body.
The Canadian Press Association in
session last week, in Toronto, unanim-
ously _passed. a resolution placing- on
record its devotion to the British Em -
ire, and determinationas Britons and
anadians to stand by the motherland
when the latter is menaced by war in
any part of the globe. As representing
all political parties in Canada, an appeal
15 made to brother journalists in the
United States to secure and dissemin-
ate more accurately facts about Can-
ada's resorces and institntions among
those ignorant of the existing state of
affairs. in this country

In tracing up some of Santa Claus' good
deeds this year, a lady gives us the fol-
lowing account of her Christmas box.
The lady's name is Mrs. H. G. Ferguson,

The congregation of the leading
Presbyterian Church at North Sydney
have almost boycotted the minister,
Rev. Dr. Murray, because of his ef-
fusive welcome to Sir Charles Tupper.
Michael Kavanaugh, aged 13 years,
of Windsor, had his hand cut off above
the wrist on Saturday. He and his
brother were fixing up the feed for
cows, when the hand slipped under
the knife of the cutting box.
During the year 1805 there were
filed in Waterloo county 200 chattel
mortgages, renewals and bills of sale.
The total amount secured by each
mortgages and bills of sale were $281,-
559.43 ; 29 assignments were made for
the benefit of creditors.
The city of Brantford has between
1,300 and 1,400 wells, and to this
source has been traced the outbreak of
typhoid fever there some three ago. On
the advice of the Provincial Board of
Health the local authorities have or-
dered 150 of these wells to be filled in,
aad it is said 'there are more to fol-
low.
A letter recently received at Ede
inonton, N. W. T., by G. W. Gardner,
from Fort Providence, Mackeniie
River, states that 22 deaths have oc-
curred in the vieinity of the fort with-
in a few weeks from someunknown
disease. The symptoms are sore throat
and swelling of the lower limbs. Death
occurs in aboat four days.

Comb, of Granger, Mono township.
near Orangeville, was hauling wood

Jos. Merrifield, the 12year-old son of
Frank Merrifield, of Hendrick, Ia.,
shot his 7 -year-old brother with. a
Winchester rifle Friday morning, and
then killed himself, blowing the entire
top or his head away. Th.e father had
lett the two boys together in the house,
and they became involved 1110. quarrel.

C. B. McDonald, editor of the Ox-
ford Register, a little paper in Sum-
mer county, Kansas, has started for
Paris, Preece, on the invitation of a
Russian countess, who recently lost
her husband and wishes to share her
fortune with Mr. McDonald, who is
Ilex. cousin. The eountees in question
was re Miss McDonald, a ehopgirl in
Chicago at the time of the World's
Fair. A Russian count fell in love
with and married her. She sent Mc-
Donald a check for $1,500 to pay his
way to France.
Charenati Hyams, the New Orleans
millionaire, who coeiributed some
$140,000 towards securing theacquittal
of the Hymns twins on the charge of
murder, has deposited in a Toronto
bank a sum equivalent to the $20,090
of the Wells insurance which Harry
secured from his wife. The interest
of this amount will be paid to Mrs.
Hyams annually. It is stated that the
twins have had placed to their credit
$20,000 each by their relatives., who
have stood bv them loyally.
