'Stir. William Higgins, of Clinton,
but who was visiting his son at at
Portage, died very suddenly on Friday
last. Ide had just bid his son good-bye,
intending ' to cone back to Clinton,..
and had reached the doorstep when he
dropped and instantly expired. He
was aged 7I years, was ordinarily,

The lecture on "Memory" given in
Main street church on Monday even-
ing by Rev. Schram, was a success.
The carnival in the rink on Monday
evening was fairly well attended. Fol-
lowing are the prize winners :—Half
toile race, F. Willis ; boys race . under
16 years, John Spackman; potato race,
B. Spicer ; Lady's fancy costume, Miss
Laura Lumley ; Gent's comic costume,
Fred'k Down, Parkhill.
Herman (;heater, the five year old
son of Edward Bissett, of Forest, died
in that place on Sunday last. The boy
had been in his usual good health,
when he was attacked with membrane
croup, which caused his death :after a
few hour's illness. The remains were
brougat to Exeter on Monday and on
Tuesday interred in the Exeter ceme-
tery.
The call by Askin street Methodists,
London, to Rev. R. Hobbs, of Brant-
ford, hasbeen discovered to be illegal
as the meeting was held without the
sanction of the chairman of the dis-
trict, Rev. A. L. Russell. Another
meeting will, therefore, have to be.
held to consider a call. It is said that
a majority of the Board still favor
Rev. Mr. Hobbs,
but the larger num-
ber of the congregation are opposed to
his coming to London.

Dr. Campbell, of Seaforth, has dis-
posed of his medical practice toDr, De-
war, of Cbippawa, and will remove to
Brooklyn, where he has purchased a
practice. Dr. Campbell was the House
of Refuge physician,
About five o'clock Tuesday Morning
the driving-shedon the farm of Thos,
Sha.pton, 'West • of Exeter, was
burner to the ground. Live ashes
thrown in a barrel near the shed was
the cause of the fire. -
The municipal clerks in Norfolk
county are taking steps to form an as-
sociation similar to that of the clerks
in Oxford county, Their first meeting
will be held at Sincoe during the ses-
sion of the county council in the latter
past of January..

the•Usborne & Hibbert Fire Insurance
Company, has resigned the office on
account of failing health. At the forth-
coming annual meeting a successor is
to be chosen, besides other important
brtsiness transacted.
Reeve Bowden, with characteristic
enterprise and benevolence, is arrang-
ing for a charity concertto be given in

the Opera. Housei n a few weeks.

It is also Mr. gBawden's intention. to
organize a permanent Benevolent
Society of members of the several
churches in town, through whose
hands all charity shall in future be
distributed. The scheme is a good
one and the Reeve deserves the good
will of all citizens in the project.
John McDowell, of the 2nd con.,
McKillop, while engaged around a
grain crusher last Thursday, had the
misfortune to lose the greater part of
four fingers of his right hand. This
makes three of the brightest and
cleverest young farmers in this section
who have been maimed for life while
working with machinery in the past
two months. We learn that Messrs.
Black and McIntosh, of Tuckersmith,
who were injured some time ago, are
progressing as well as can be expected.
The semi-annual district meeting of
Oddfellows was held in the hall in
Seaforth on Wednesday afternoon. In
the evening a lodge of instruction was
held, when about 100 were present,
lodges from Clinton, Exeter and Hen-
sel]. taking part. A number of candi-
dates were also initiated. At the
close of the lodge an adjournment
was made to the Commercial hotel,
where a sumptuous supper was served.
Old Fidelity lodge, which for a long
time has been numerically weak, al-
though financially strong, is taking a
oom upward, and bids fair to become
e of the strongest in

Much symathy is felt in the com-
munity for Mr. and Mrs. Henry For-
syth, of the Kipper' Road, Tucker -
smith, on account of the severe ber-
eavement which has befallen them.
During the past few days their two
only children, an interesting little boy
of two years, and a bright little girl
of four, have been removed from their
home by death. Robert H. died on
Wednesday of last week, and Gracey,
the eldest and only remaining child,
died on Monday last. She was aged
4 years and 21 days. That dread dis-
ease diphtheria, was the cause of
death.
Mr. Wnt. Cash, formerly of McKil-
lop, writingfrom Desert,Algoma, on
January 6t, says: "Thweather has
been very variable here so far this
winter, running from 60 and 70 above
freezing to 35 below zero on the 4th of
this month. There are a number' of
school teachers from Huron employed
here at present. Mr. Forest, from
Stanley, is principal of Thessalon
school; Mr. Cain from Howick, is prin-
cipal- of the- school in Sault Ste
Marie; Welsh, lately of Leadbury, is in
our own school. There are others,
whose names do not now occur to me.
and, like Huron boys generally, they
are all doing well."

Joseph Collie, of Egrnondville, died
last week, of dropsy at a good age.

Dr. W. R. Carr, Kirkton, is the
father of a fine big girl, presented to
him on the llth Inst. Mother and
baby doing well.
Henry Hern, arrested last week, by
Constable Gill, for stealing a horse and
rig, was sentenced at Goderich. yester-
day by Judge Doyle, to three years at
Kingston penitentiary.
Mr. David Dorrance has sold his
farm on Roxboro road, near Seaforth,
to Mr. Thomas German for $3,000.
This a good farm and nicely situated.
Mr. German takes possession, on
April lst.
Edward Bosssenberry, of Zurich, had
one of John McAllister's coltsto break,
and one day this week he took it out
to drive. The . colt reared and fell
back, bursting a vein, and in a short
time the beast bled to death.
One day last week, Mr. John Mc-
Dowell, of Roxboro. McKillop, met
with a ` very painful and unfortunate
accident. He was feeding a straw
cutter, when his left hand was caught
by the knives, and the ends of three of
bis fingers were cut off and the fourth
severely crit.
Mrs. Elizabeth 1h e Forbes, hes wife of the
late John Forbes, died at
the residence
of her daughter, Mrs. Taylor, Clinton,
on Thursday, just one day before the
anniversary of her 91st birthday.
Born in Scotland, she came to Canada
in 1844, residing in Teronto for about
17 years, and in Clinton for about 34.
A meeting of the Huron Medical
Association was held in Seaforth on
Wednesday last. There was a good
attendance of the leading;medical men
of the county. Dr. Shaw, of Clinton,
was electedresident for the current
year ; Dr. pMackay, Seaforth, vice-
president, and Dr. Turnbull, Clinton;
secretary.
The Chicago Canadian-AAmeri-
can, of the Iith inst., publishes
