EVENED TO DEATEL-A sad fatality
happened about 5 a. m. Satin•clay, in
which an old lady named Mrs. Mc
Callum, aged 92 years, was burned to
death. It is supposed that the old
lady, who lives alone, had on going to
bed put on a big fire. which duringt he
night, either by a defect 'in the chim-
ney or some other cause, set fire in the
house. Her sou whose bouse is with-
in a few yards of hers, awoke about
5 o'clock and saw that her bouse was
on fire, butenothing could be done to
save her. The house was burned to
the ground. When the ruins were
searched tile charred body of the old
lady was foaled.'

number of farmers delivered fowl at
Messrs. Seines & Halls, Winchelsea,

thieving are being carried on in some
parts of Blanshard. John Gowan got
fifty hens taken in one night. -Budd-
ing operations will go on extensively
in this neighborhood next summer.

They all report having 'spent a very
enjoyable tirne, and the sleighing was
immense. Arthur Cook, of Clinton,
was in town last Friday introducing
his patent clothes reel. He claims it
is the best reel ever manufactured.
Wm. Elder is agent in Hensall. -.The
Misses Hog,ne of New York, are visit-
ing at Miss Carlisle's. -Mrs. Alex. Mc-
Pherson, who has been attending the
bedside of her sister-in-law, at Bel -
grave, returned home on Monday
last. Rev. J. S. Henderson is holding
special services in Carmel church this
week. Business is booming in town
since the sleighing and there has been
lots of grain and wood marketed here
this week. Mr. George McEwen,
Reeve of Hay Township, left this
morning for Clinton to attend the
County Council which is beiug held
there.

BRIEFS. -The relnains of the late
Mr. George Hayes were interred in
the Parkhill cemetery Wednesday
afternoon. All the members of the
family were present at the funeral. -
Mr. Benjamin Pile, a popular farmer
of this neighborhood, and a director of
the West Williams Agricultural So-
ciety, was married Wednesday to Miss
Rebecca Meadd, daughter of Mr. Geo.
aleadd, of 1VIcGillivra,y. They left on
the afternoon train for Toronto and
other points. Henry Charles Way
died at the residence of his brother
here Friday afternoon. He was 28
years. old.- The remains of the late Mr
J. L. Smith, la. S., who died suddenly
in Toronto last week, was brought here
for interments Mr. Smith was the son
of the late Peter Smith, of Mcfaillivra,y,
and nephew of James Smith, ex -M. P.
P., of 1Vlaple Lodge.

were married last week. The Fertile

recovered from his late illness.

spire of the Presbyterian Church,
