Montretl, Q. April 23.-Notwithstandieg that
the weatherwas unfavorable, it cold rain
having fallen all day, the market was 1 very
brisk one and the attendance of both buyers
and sellers were considered good. 19/he0e were
over 400 huh:hers' cattle, some or which were
in exoellen t condition, and will no doubt be
bought by shippers 10 811 up a load. There
were 450 calves, but the market appears to be
glutted; comieguently prices ruled low. Sheep
and lansba were in demand, but there were only
20 sheep and a spring lambs The butchers'
°little sold at prices varying from 3.ie to 5e per
lb,and some which were nos in good order
were offered at oven lower prioeS The cold.
rain and the muddy state of the market had a
bad effect on the poor cattle and the young
calves. The latter were gold as low as 31
each, and the highest prioe paid was 36. Sheep
brought from $4 to 86 each, and a pring lambs
52 75 to $4 75. Fah hogs are in demand and
ruling higher, 5o to 5:10 being asked. Drovera
are searching the country far and near for
beef cattle and sheep for shipping purposes. It
is reprrted that shippers have been •offered
lower rates in Now York than in the city, and
Mr. Robert Bickerdike has engaged five
steamers to load with American cattle at 3s fid
per head.
