Robert Thomson, brother of Mr. John
Thomson. of Seaforth, and father of Dr.
Thomson, ofliensall, at the age of 74
years.
The frame house on the Lewson Moore

entirely deseroyed by fire early on Friday
morning last, and the barn had a

Albert Mahleffe, B. A., a Goderioh
Collegiate Iusititute boy, has just finished
his theological course in the Presbyterian
College, 'Montreal, winning the highest
awards of this yea-tbe gold medal and
the McKay scholarship of 660.
The schedule of cenviotions issued by-
tbe Clerk of the Peace for the quarter
ending in March is one of the smallest in
the history of the County -only 14 canes
in all. Eight of these were for yiolationa
of -the liquor aot, but convictions were had
in only three; aside from these, the fines
aggregated only If19.
Ori Friday last, the wife of Mr. Thomas
Roe, of Seaforth, passed away. Last fall
Mn and Mrs. Roe retired from their farra

Mra. Roe was 70 years of age and had

The residenee of Wra Oanaeron, of West
Wawanosh. with the oontents, were de.
stroyed by fire on Priday morning last
about 10 o'clock, We learn that among
the contents there was quite a, sum of
money burned, some of which belonged to
the funds of ths school titration, he being
secretary treasurer* The dwelling and
contents were insured for about three
hundred dollars. He has, however, sus-
tained a heavy loss. Fortunately, it hap.
paned in daytime, for had it occurred
during- the night, the result might have
been more serious. As it was, the fire
spread over the dwelling so rapidly that
very little clothing or other articles were
saved. It was one of the oldest relics of
log homes* in West Wiwanosh. The
cause of the fire, so far as known, was
from tha sta:vepipe which entered the
chimney, haying become detached from
it.
The proposed rules and by-laws to
govern the House of Refuge were read,
amended and adopted, at the last meeting
of the Committee, and 100 coma recom-
mended to be "printed for the use of
members of the Council, and others. The
Committee certainly cannot be 'shared
with extravagance, in view of the salaries
reoommeaded for the different positions,
as follows ;a -Inspector, $100 per annum*,
be to make an inspection at least ones a
week ancr oftner, if neceseary ; Caretaker,
$250, witleneouse accommodation and living;
Matron, $150 ; Physician, $150, he to

geoommended that a chaplain be secured,

Thedriends of Rev. Jac Ferguson, of
Southampton, formerly of Granton, will
be pleased to know that he is suoceeding
well on that oircuie, and that the health of

any time since leaving Granton, Last
year they were able to pay $200 of the
church debt, bought a new parsonage and
organ, have the salary paid up itt full and
the Ooonexional Mode in advance of the
previous year. This is an evidence of
gratifying progress.
One by one the pioneers of Middleaex
are going to their long home. The deatb
of Mr. 13erjamin Cook, of con 7, Weet-
miaster, removes one of the verv earliest
settlers in these parts. Decreased. was
born ia Suffolk, Eugland, iu 18L0. In the
summer of 1832 he came alone to Lower
Canada, and remoyea to Middlesex the
following year, wheu he bought the farm
where he lived to the time of his death.

at his home there Monday afternoon about

Mrs. Stephensote, of St. Marys, wan

was 79 years of as and had been for

What might have proyed a fatal acoident
occurred the other day to Mr. John
Burns, of Blanehard. eta he was driving
home from a sale in Biddulph township,
leadine a young horse behind his buggy;
the animal took fright and soared. the
other horse, with the result that the buggy
was upset and Mr. Burns got entangled
wrier the rig, he meteowhile trying to
prevent both animals from getting away.

event in the life of a gentleman around
Ibis neighborhood :-"Dr. J. L. Mc-
Taggart and Miss Emilia Dickson were
united en marriage last week, at the
residence of friends on Hancock
avenue. Only the immediate friends
of the bride and groom were invited.
The presents received were both num-
erous and costly. The happy couple
are now at home at 198 Twelfth street."
Dr. McTaggart is a son of Mr. H. N.
McTaggart, postmaster at Chiselhurst,
and is one of Detroit's clever and rising
young physicians. His numerous
friend § in this vicinity extend most
hearty congratulations on the happy
event a,bove mentioned.

Branch Agricultural Society met in the
townhall recently. The prize lige for
1895 was revised. The days of the fall

Louis Wurrn has also moved into the

Koehler and her, daughber, from Caval-
ier, NortheDakota, are here visiting
Mrs. Axt, Mrs. Koehler's mother, who

but who is now better. -Mr. Hagan, of
Seaforth collegiate institute, and Mies
Laura Williams of Alma college, St,
Thomas, are visiting friends in town. -
Mr. Harry Hess, wile has been ill
during the winter, is convalescing. -Dr
Campbell is erecting it new- office on
the raill property south of 0 Eilber's
store. -Rev. D. H. Breland is attending
conference in South Cayuga, this week.

disease so weakened him that he finally
succombed on Tuesday morning. The
funeral takes 'place to day.(Thureday) to
