A Cowardly Deed.
1 ORONTO. Ont., March 27. ---Arthur
�. Zimmerman, of 16 Brant Place,
attempted to kill his wife Maria this
Mt -ming and then made a desperate
ieffort to take his own life. Zinamer-
anan has been quarreling with his
-wife for the past three months, and
'vas summoned to appear in. the
police court to -day to answer to a
charge of ill-treating her., This serv-
ed only to increase his temper, and
going into the house this morning he
seized a hammer and dealt her two
savage blows on the head. The wom-
an fell unconscious to the floor, and
Zimmerman, thinking that he had
killed her, then commenced to com-
mit suicide.
Proceiring a sharp knife he slashed
one of his wrists thinking that he
''would immediately bleed to death,
but finding this too slow he plunged
the weapon into his left breast. The
blade, however, missed his heart and
pierced one of his lungs. Medical aid
-was summoned and it was found that
the woman's skull had been fractur-
ed, but she Was not in so critical a
nondition as Zimmerman himself.
Zimmerman is a German, and has
been in Toronto only a couple of
enonths. He was employed by the
.Silver Plate Company, King street
-vest.

Sir Chas. Hibbert Tupper has re-
turned to active work in the Cabinet,'
all difficulties of the kind lately re-
ported having been, if they ever
2'eally existed, amicably"settled.
Sir Mackenzie Bowell was asked
by a reporter if everything was all
eight now. The Premier answered
-with a smile that there was never
anything wrong.
It is understood that no Govern-
ment measure will be introduced this
session regarding the Manitoba
schools; that the matter will be left
an open question, and that only the
e�m,Omates will be submitted to Par-
-1".rament, so that the session maybe as
short as possible, thus giving an op-
portunity of all early appeal to the
country after prorogation. Sir Charles
was at his office in the Department
of Justice Saturday.
Mrs. W. P. Smith, of Chatham, was

next day for $275, when the lamp ex-
ploded and the instrument was totally
:destroyed.

British Grain Trade
LONDON, April I. -The Mark Lane Express
in its weekh• review of the British grain
trade says : English and foreign wheats' have
been maintnired, except California, which is
weaker at 23s 9d, arrived; 24s 3d prompt ship-
ment, Barleys have had a 9d rise; oats and
earn havebeen steady. 'lo -day English and
foreign wheats are a slow sale. Flours aro in
fair request. Barley and oats firm and corn 3d
cheaper.
Montreal Live Stock Markets
MONTREAL,QUE., April 1. -There were about
400 head of bur gibers' cattle, 350 calves, Go sheep
and 20 spring lambs offered for sale at the
East End Abattoir to -day. The butchers were
present in large numbers and trade was fairly
good, but prices continue about the same as
on last week's markets, prime cattle being a
trifle higher. while common stooks were a
shade easier in price, A few of the best beeves
were sold at about 4e per pound, rough and
half fatted beasts sold at from 21e to 3o per
Pound, and some of the leaner ones brought
very little over 2c per pound. A few of the
best calves were sold at from $5 to $8 each,
but common vealssold at from $450 to $5
eeob; Mixed lots of sbeep sold at from 4a to
41e per pound. Spring lambs sold at from
$2 60 to 34 50 each. Fat hogs are easier in
pride, or from 5o to 54e per pound.
