Among the mail matter which arrived
thy:the steamship Sarnia at Halifax on
:Saturday were packages to go by the Can-
tdian route to Japan and China.
The report of the United States Secre-
tary of War shows the number of enlisted
men to be 25,772, not including 2,136 offi-
cers stationed at ninety five posts.
At Parry Sound on Friday a vote was
taken on the repeal of the local option by-
law. The prohibitionists triumphed by a
majority of thirty and the by-law stands.
Mr. Robert Anderson, a talented young
violinist of Montreal, who has been study-
iing in Paris, has not been heard from for
some months, and his friends are alarmed.
The Countess Frieda Riidolf, the daugh-
ter of Count Ferdinand Ritdolf of Ger-
bnany, and Prof. Luigi Dellaro, who plays
is fiddle in a theatrical orchestra, were
married by a New York Alderli,an on Sat-
ilyday.
At Philadelphia on Saturday two wo-
men were burned to death by a fire that
started in the boarding-house of Mrs. C. 13,
Reeves on Broad street. The victims
were Miss Agnes Cullinan and Mrs. Ella
Smith.
The British mails per steamship Sarnia
which reached Halifax on Saturday, left
on Sunday at 5.45 a.m. and arrived in
Montreal postoffice shortly after 5 o'clock
Monday morning, being the fastest time
on record.
Mr. Joseph Marquis, father of one of the
victims killed in the street railway build-
ing at Montreal, has taken 'out an action
for $5,000 damages against the Dominion
Bridge Company and Joseph Brunet &

A very sad accident happened Friday at
Mrs Maxwell's :arra, con 3, of Peel. Her
son, a young man, was feeding a steam
straw cutter, when his right hand was
caught in the rollers and out in pieces
nearly to the wrist.
The coroner's jury at Guelph brought

The fine residence of Mr Thos Holliday,
