cross -petition against the defeated candi-

United States, has decided to commence
building a tavern in New York and expects
to have it opened on November 1, 1897 .

Well, the beautiful is here. And most
of us would be just as well pleased if it
had remained away a little while longer.
The fall weather which we enjoyed last
week, when the flowers ceased to bloom
and the last green leaf withered, was
simply delightful.
Excitement ran high for a feet minutes
on Saturday last when a runaway team
came tearing down front street at a lively
pace, the driver haying lost all control over
the animals. Things looked blue until
the team came in contact with an electric
light post and was stopped.
The police magistrate has committed
two more vagrants to the county jail for
six menthe, one a man named David
White, from near Exeter, and the other,
Sarah McKenzie, an old woman of the
town who was so feeble she had almost to
be carried into the court room.—Goderich

The Criminal Code provides a penalty
of $50 for dealers who aell pistols or air
guns, or ammunition for the same, to per-
sons under sixteen years of age. Dealers

be identified are liable to a fine of S25,

The Stratford Herald says: keepers are are warned to be on the look -out
for a pair of sharpers. Two men. arriving
separately and apparently unacquainted,
take a room on the second floor of the
hotel. One has a large trunk, the other
a smaller. Atthe first chance, when no
one is about, the smaller one is put inside
the larger. The owner of the former then
declares his loss, declaring that the prop-
erty has been stolen, and often leaves the
house with a substantial sum in his pocket
as a compensation for the vanished trunk.
An amusing incident occarred on our
streets the other day, As a young fellow
was going to work he was met on one of
the corners of the street by a bevy of
school children, the fair sex generally pre•
dominating, and assailed on all sides by
anowballstnrown by the youngsters. To
resist was useless and in a case like this
the young fellow thinking diecration the
better part of the valor, ran down street
fot dear life , only to be naught at the next
corner by another gang of juveniles. We
believe he is running yet.
George estrum, a lunatic, escaped from
London Asylum last Sunday and was
in the cells here for couple days, having
been captured by Chief Gill, and retained

The monthly meeting of the South
Huron Ministerial Association was held
in Caven Presbyterian church on Mon-
day afternoon. November 5th. Rev.
Geo. Jackson, President, occupied the
chair. The minutes of the last meet-
ing were read by the Secretary, Rev.
W. H. Butt, and on motionE,were adopt-
ed, Arrangements were made for the
December and January meetings. after
whichRev. (Martin read a sermon on
Acts 3. 19. He said the Apostles were
model preachers and Peter in the case
before us made some stinging home
thrusts, Repentance was the starting
point of reform, and as an incentive to
it there was the promise of "the blott-
ing out of sin." which meant the ex-
tinction of it. The fruit of this sorrow
of heart was seen in conversion and its
importance was clearly shown in the
results which followed. Friendly
criticism was offered by all the members
present. Then followed a lengthy and
masterly review of Prof. Drummand's
"Ascent of man," by Rev. C. Fletcher.
Extensive quctations wets made from
the work and practical comments made,
but as the book will be still furthur re-
viewed at the January meeting the

date. The meeting adjourned with the
benediction by Rev. C. Fletcher to
meet the first Monday of December in
the Main Street Methodist Church.

Rev. E. W. leant, of the Triyitt Mem-
orial Church, intends giving an organ reci-
tal in the above-named church on Thanks-

The Toronto papers state the Black -
Routledge gang of burglars and safe blow-
ers is supposed to be operating in Huron
County.
While cleaning one of the dray Horses
on Tuesday night, Will Gillespie received
a kink from the animal, making an ugly
gash in his face. ..
The Council met Tuesday evening. It
was decided to turn the band room into a
reading room in connection with the Me-

George the Hatter is once more shedding
the light of his genial countenance on

in all the crowd of the would-be lynchers
at Listowel who laid a hand on Cbattelle.

Elizabeth, relict of the late Robert Fer-
guson, Zurich road, Elay township, who
moved to the village two years ago, died
at the residence of her son -fn -law, Chas.
Snell, jun., at the age of 64 years on Wed-
nesday evening last, after a short illness
from that fatal disease, consumption.
The funeral took plane on Friday last, for

Martin, the Presbyterian minister, offici-
ated. The funeral was largely attended,

Exeter Woollen Mill was burglarized and
about $100 worth or goods stolen. All
trace of the burglars was lost, but suspicion
pointed to parties in McGillivray, On
Tuesday Detective Rodgers of Toronto and
Constable .Et, W. Ward, of London, visited
McGillivray and arrested Edward Shoel-
dice. Shouldioe was taken to London and
remanded until the 19th. Mr. MItir visit-
ed McGillivray and identified Mole of the
goods found in Shoelace's possession,
Mr, Thomas Oudmore of Osborne has
just returned from a six weeks visit to
friends in Southern Manitoba. This was
his first visit to that Province and he was
ranch pleased with the

are doing well; have splendid forme and
would not return to Huron to farm if ,they

ed large orders for poultry for ship
ment the last of this month and are
