The La,lse Huron fishing
season almost ended in
tragedy Monday when the 18
ton Larry John sprang a leak
while pulling nets from the
water about 81,1 -'miles from
Goderich. The fishing tug,
operated -by Captain Jerry
Reid, sprang a leak while
pulling nets for the winter
with the 65 ton Bessie Minn.
The leak deN,:eloped when a
housing around the propellor
shaft where it goes through
the tug's hull came loose. The
Larry John began to take on
water and to keep the housing
from tearing out .of the hull
Captain Reid was forced to
jam the propellor shaft
making it impossible for the
.tug to make any headway.
Helpless in sets of eight to
12 feet and winds about 3;54
miles per hour Captain Reid
radioed the Bessie Ann II for
assistance. He jammed the
Propellor shaft with a pipe
wrench to enable 'him to keep
his engines running for power .
for the tug's light9 and radio.
-The tug's crew, - Charles
Tiedeman, 48 and Scott
Kennedy, 17, gota gasoline

pumps to remove the water
pouring in through the
stuffing box. The pump
however sucked up a piece of
steel and seized, rendering
the tug nearly'helpless.
"We. concerned
because we figured w'e had
about 90 minutes afloat at the
rate the water was coming:
in;" said Captain Reid. "I had
u good crew and together we
stayed calm and tried to get
control of the situation.-

"Tiedenian, helped a great
deal in avoiding panic. and
appeared to he oblivious to,
the apparent danger.
"1 think I was more scared
than he was," said CaptainRerd.
Captain Reid's distress call
brought the Bessie Ann II to
the scene and the 65 ton
vessel's master Captain Bob
McGraw took'the Larry John
into tow. Captain McGraw
said that towing the vessel
was "t&ich and go" duet° the
fact that if a problem
developed the Bessie Ann
couldn t handle there was no
other ship for 100 miles.
Captain Reid said his main
concern when he was in tow
was fouling the tow line in the
heavy seas: He said that if the
line broke the Larry John
would be helpless but added
that Captain McGraw's.
