back into normal society.
Mrs. Haskett said from the
witness box that Heather
Gardens was more than a
hoarding' house because the
patients had- better medical
care and closer supervision.
She said that the home has
been okayed .the fire
department and even the
Huron Health Inspectors,
after.a few initial complaints.

currently has a staff of 15 to
handle the present 64
residents, Mrs. Haskett said
she envisioned Heather
Gardens eventually handling

years time.

be a burden on the welfare

'Dr. James Kaufman,
medical director at. St.
Thomas hospital and ' Dr,
Michael Conlon, medical-
direc:tpr at Goderich hospital,
disagreed on, the basic
philosophy behind the home.
While Dr. Kaufman gave
his full support to 'Heather
Gardens, and said there was
a desperate need for such
facilities, Dr. Conlon said he
agreed with the concept but
had serious reservations
about releasing patients to
the • home from Goderich
because of Mrs. Haskett's
severe financial limitations.
Dr. , Conlon ° said the
Hasketts had worked "like
staves" but the residents'I"
need more professional help.
"It's a shame she has to
rely on the patients' disability
pensions," Dr. Conlon said.
Hans ' Strybosch and
.Pamela Dedici.,- social
workers from St. Thomas,
were fully' behind the
Hasketts and said that
patients they had visited
there were cheerful and well
looked after.

Medical Officer of Health, .
testifie$ he found the home to
be in poor shape in December
of 1974 and said the barrack
building' wasn't ready for
"occupancy even though 11
residents were living there.
A "No one knew what it
(Heather Gardens) was," Dr.
Mills said when the Health
Unit first inspected it last
year.
He said that the Huron
Health Unit had withdrawn
their representative from the
Heather Gardens' advisory
board because Mrs. Haskett
wasn't taking theirdvice.
