Red Wing OWtimers in trouble
behind the Paper leafs
Signal -Star Paper Leafs
coach Ed Byrski is all smiles
,this week as he prepares his
squad for a return match with
the Detroit Red Wing Old-
timers this Sunday.
The foxy Byr's-ki, who
previously coached the Polish
National - Team to a winless
se,lson, believes he has a
-blend of wyly -veterans and
spunky rookies who can
overcome the tireless Red
Wings. In.a special interview
with the Signal -Star coach
Byrski beamed with op-
timism as he announced his
starting lineup.
"I understand that there
are a number of changes in
our lineup this year but I
-wouldn't know because I
don't go to practice," he said,
"but from .what I have been
able to overhear there will
'definitely be a, hockey 'game
on Sunday."
But then Byrski has always
been known to keep a low
profile and his cunning is
evident at every Paper Leafs
losing game. His prowess and
last minute strategic
manoeuvres have wreaked
havocmamong his own players
who were generally confused
to start with:
However this year 'Byrski
has made some rearguard.
changes that he believes will
bolster the Paper, Leafs
defensive efforts. A
newcomer, Tdmmy Thunder
Thompson , was put on
waives by the Alexandra
fF Marine and ' General Iron
Lung squad and Byrski
promptly napped him up for
blueline duty with John
Buchanan who figured it was
wiser to expand his waistline
and force opponents to make
nreasonable ' detours to get
around h,im. John B. claims it
saves the legs for the big
ones.
The other defensive pair is
corhprised 'of two gangly
veterans,. R.G. Bob
Magnate' Shrier and George
`Hook' Vanderburgh. Coach
Byrski had hoped that the two
six foot plus defencemen
would be an asset in -blocking
field goals which was a.trick
be, learned watching.
to revision on Sunday af-
ternoon.
R.G. Bob is a . doubtful
starter for Sunday since the
snowfall may force him into
some downhill racing. Hook
Vanderburgh was expected to.
do great things this year but
Byrski is concern -ed that his
vision will be impaired since
a flock of migrating birds:
took up residence, in a new
bird cage he, attached to his
helmet to protect his nbse. ,
Byrsk.t's defensive tactics
will include a new netminder
in., the name of Floyd Louri
sbury. He will definitely be an
0..asset .to the team in goal once ,
he figures out which glove
goes on which hand and if he
can also remember. that he
must put his other equipment
on before the goalie'pads.
This year that speedy
youngster the Newfie Bullet,
Tom Flynn will have two new
wingers to' contend with.
Rockin Russ Kenwell will
patrol left wing once he_,can
determine where that is and
Chris Anderson, who was
scouted in"a Dundas Hotel by
Byrski will patrol right wing.
The second Paper Leaf line
consists of Dave `Spike' Sykes

up outdoor hockey since he
found himself concentrating
his efforts on keeping his
scant frame within the
perimeters Qf the playing
surface. Flashy 15 gave the
team a big effort last year as
three pucks bounced off his
head and into the net while he
was lying face down in the
crease. Wonka, who last year
got a first hand look at how
goalg are scored decided to
leave the nets and apply that
knowledge as a forward this
year. ' -
The final line consists of
Dennis Vanderburgh, Paul
Steep and Tom 'Vanderburgh:
Dennis was scouted by coach
Byrski in one'of the aisles of
the A and P store taking slap
shots with stale donuts and he
should. be a great one when
they convince him that a puck
is just like a donut. Paul Steep
is used, as a psychological
weapon as he has "again been
instructed to wear his fake
eyes, nose andr mustache'
disguise to the, game. Paul
insists it isn't a disguise but
who will believe him. Tom
"Twinkle, Toes' Vanderburgh
returns again this year .and

from anywhere on the ice a's
he often tries from' his
blueline or hehi'rd the net or
anywhere.
M d,
Brian Rumig is the fifth
defenseman for the Paper
Leafs and has•recluested that
u number of pylons be set on
the ice for game as he had
great success against the
pylons in practice.
Coach Byrski also has a full
compliment of assistants to
back him up behind the
bench. Howard Aitken will
return as Manager after
another successful year in the
Vice -Magnate Hockey
League. Gary 'Gar -v' Haist
will perform a. dual role as
muscle rubber and hack up
goalie. However this year
Gary has agreed to pass do
his muscle rubbing, talents to
a young apprentice. • That
apprentice is Don 'Hot Shot'
Hubick who has aspirations or
becoming a full-time movie
director for Green and Parent
features.
Coach Byrski has'been busy'
scouting and assembling the
hest collection of dummies he
said have ever been
assembled in one' arena.
However Byrski's prowess as
a ho(key. coach' will become
evident in the final score.
