HomeMy WebLinkAboutThe Goderich Signal-Star, 1975-12-04, Page 10P Good entertainment by GLT troupe Mr • BY SHIRLEY J. KELLER There is just no doubt about it. Canon G:G. Russell stole the show at Goderich Little Theatre's production of Mr. Scrooge last week in MacKay Hall. As the legendary skinflint Ebenezer Scrooge, Mr. Russell was superb; and the transformed Christmas - loving Scrooge, Mr, Russell. was excellent. !In fact, Garwood. ',Russell was' ' tremendous_ from his first "Humbug" to, his final "Merry Christmas". The musical comedy based on Charles Dickens -"A Christmas Carol" was directed by Marjorie Dunlop and June Hill. It was a. delightful mixture of warmth and chills; of humor and tenderness. The songs in the show had a little of everything thrown in' and each one was done in charming fashion by local performers. Top musical number was by Jane Deathe, who played Isabel, the young Scrooge's financee. Mrs,. Deathe's solo R "But That Was A Long Time Ago" was beautifully done, producing 'many dampened eyes throughout the audience. I look forward to more per- formances by this fine singer. Ebeneze'r''s songful soliloquy takes second spot in; the best musical performance class. Garwood Russell's disgruntled rendition about Scrooge a seasons appealling love song to Mrs. Cratchit played by Sharon Millers and to Mrs. Cratchit (Slaron -Miller) and the Cratchit kits ( Peter Thom- son, Lori Dykstra, John Czerw1n5k,i ° and ' Brenda Galachiuk) for their number about' the ' mean, stingy Scrooge. Best actor award goes, of Course, to Garwood Russell. Seldom has there been a better Scrooge on any stage. He, was mean when the role demanded it: he was li,appy or terrified or humorous; or generous whenever it was'in the script. Will Goderich GLT audiences ever forget his bedroom ballet. when he cavorted in his nightgown, leaping and 'shouting until' everyone was 'just as e)scited as •he? ,Or his ordeal with the three ghosts when he was so frightened he shook all over arid. could utter little more than whimpers? , In second spot in .the male acting department was Goderfch ' 'Police Chief Pat King a the ghost of Jacob Marley and ,the Ghost of Christmas p,re,st?nt,,, The difference in the two roles w•as remarkable, yet Chief King carried off each with complete' cease. always in full Command of the situation. Peter Thomson as little Harry Cratchit mads his first appearance on the'GLT stage I., Go1)l::Rrcl-1 SIGNAL. -STAR, THURSDAY, DECEMBER 4, 1975 --PAGE 5B delight Effective stage lighting made the Ghost of Christmas Past ( Beecher Menzies) and Scrooge (Canon G.G. Russell) appear that much more eerie. In this scene, Scrooge was hauled from his hiding place in his bed by the ghost, and taken in'a wheelbarrow ba"ck to a ,time in his life which Scrooge would rather not have remembered. ALT members naltdo good use of the -MacKay Hall s,tage for this produc-, tion, havhng at times two and three scene's set' up and divided by black -out curtains. The costumes were colorful and fitting to the Dickens era. The , cast was enthusiastic and much of the credit for that must certainly go to directors Marjorie Dunlop and June Hill. ( staff photo) the- annual monstrosity ' known as Christmas was expertly done. Third place goes to Bob Cratchit (Dave Carruthers), and Tiny_TimCratchit (John Czerwinski) for their ren- ditionof Gee Up Little'Pony, With John perched on his shoulders, , Dave did a maE:terful job ' of running abouc ,the stage like a pony and singing along with John. . Honorable mention in the musical category must go to Dave Carruthers who sang an to my knowledge, and added a measure 'of enthusiasm which is hard to ignore. Even though he had' only a few -lines, the audience was well aware he was' on stage. He looks like a keen performer for future productions: An-iong the' ladies, Cathy Jenkins as Mrs. Dilber, Scrooge's housekeeper, was just great. Cathy is always good in any role she accepts, and as the rough and ready Mrs. Dil,ber who looks after (continued on page 9B) LJ$INESS RECTORY 1 PUBLIC NOTICE TO SENIOR CITIZENS The Goderich district Housing Action Committee is attempting to determine if there is a need for more senior citizen housing in Goderich.
