one another to provide
'adequate night service in
town. Ir. Carter said that the
two companies could get
together and establish a
schedule N hereby only one
company was operating at
night w on weekends which
would cut costs to the com-
panies and still provide
service.
Members of the Goderich Police Force have been acting as
crossing guards at five points helping children attending
Victoria Public School fo cross safely. Chief P. D. King said
it was only a temporary measure and that the Ministry of
Dave MacDonald begi work Monday as a school
crossing guard at the corner of Bayfield.,and Britannia
Road. The town wants to hire an additional two crossing
guards as they are presently using the services of bylaw
enforcement officer Dick Eisler at. the corner of Evennett
Street and Bayfield Road. Gord Jamieson resumed
duties at Victoria Street and Britannia Road. (staff

Transportation would come to Goderich to have a look at
the lights at five points and the chief was hopeful that all the
traffic could be stopped for a short period to allow
pedestriarts .to cross. ,(staff photo)

Faye Gautcher, owner of
Bluewater Taxi, feels that
meters in the cabs would
mean a fair and even
calculation of miles travelled
per individual passenger"
enabling the companies to
charge fares a ccordirigl,xShe
said that under the present
flat rate system one person
can travel. four blocks for one
dollar while, another may
travel 12 blocks for the same
price.
"Something has to be dope
to justify the gas and in-
surance increases we've had
recently," said Mrs. Gaut -
cher.
The $luewater spokesman
said she felt that night service
in Goderich did not warrant
the operation of two com-
panies. She said that one
company could- handle the
calls on any given night and
she was in favor of splitting
the hours of operation bet-
ween the companies or
having only one operate. She
added that she'. knows that
Goderich Taxi operates at
night, and she is now
referring night calls to that
company.
Louvaine Swan of Goderich
Taxi is not in favor of meter
iristallation in the cabs. She
said that she was in, favor of
an increase in the flat rate but
was opposed to meters,
'She added that •her com-
pany now operates seven
days a week from 7:30 in the
morning until midnight but

would not Qffer 24 hour ser-

uneconomical to have a
driver on duty all night since
most nights only two calls
were received for taxi ser-
vice.
Mrs. Swan explained that
the night service by her
company .was curtailed at
midnight after three years'
experience o with 24 hour
service. She said that the
small number of calls after
midnight could not possibly
cover the wages for the driver
and that the problems the
early morning fares created
for' the company were not
worth the effatt.
She added that—her com-
