The Goderich Airport
Committee has agreed to
meet with representatives of
the Ontario Ministry of
Transport and the
Menesetung Property
Owners Association to mark
trees that must be trimmed to
accommodate larger aircraft
on the runway. .
° The runway will not
physically change but the
obstruction of the runway by
trees is limiting the
threshold. Many trees will
§imply have to be cut down to
accommodate larger air-
craft.
Charles Rowland, chair-
man of the Menesetung
Property Owners
Association, approached the
airport committee last,
Wednesday to see if the

Goderich Recreation and Community Centre Board
committee was willing to
adopt a conservationist at-
titude in their.tree-trimming
program.
Mr. Rowland asked the
committee if it was a must to
trim the trees -and if so, was
the committee willing to use
some type of formula so as
not to cut -down trees. to
stumps?
"The association is not
opposed to progress and that
was never the intent of the
association," he said. "We
would like to work with the
committee and want a
proposal from this board to
take back to the association."
Airport committee
chairman, Bill Clifford said
that other trees could be
planted in replacement and
although they would not grow
to a considerable height they
would offer shade and
aesthetic 'clue to the area.
He explained that the tree
trimming would involve eight
to 10r cottage owners in the
area but since the trees are
close to buildings they would
detract from the value of the
property.
Mr, Rowland then urged
the committee to take a
conservationist approach to
the tree -trimming operation.
Mr. Clifford stated that un-
fortunately many of the trees
in question were mature trees
and the operation would leave
little more ;han stumps, but
he suggested that other
smaller trees could be
planted as replacements,
Committee 'member Lloyd
Atfield said that the length of
the runway is governed by
obstructions and even though
it is paved, the obstructions
limit the threshold. He stated
that to make ,the' runway
longer and increase the
threshold the trees would
have to be rut down,
Mr. Rowland told the'
committee he,was still
hopeful that soe type of
comprom-iso could be reached
so that the larger trees on the
cliff edge would note be
trimmed to the ground. •
