1' 2AGODERICH SIGNAL -STAR, THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 6, 1975 come. one come all! Mrs. Anne Knox is busy spear -heading a very needed and worthwhile campaign to start a Pre -teen Activities Program here in Goderich. Wednesday. Women's Day Out members -were very fortunate to hear Anne discuss her plans and what the progra m•_will be all about. For further information on it, you can contact Anne at 524- 8403. The program will be set up for children between the ages. of 11 years to 15 yearT tJ'nless . these kids are involved in hockey or figure skating there is little for them to do in Goderich. With this much free time on their hands, it is little wonder they " find themselves in trouble of one sort or another. During the Christmas vacation there has 'been no free skating for them in previous years as the arena has been used solely for the figure skating clubs. The weather isn't always • in ac- cord with outdoor rinks.. In the summer the parks program ,runs for only six weeks. Kids often hang;._...,,their own kind of music. around in' groups up town They could have discussion after that. groups' where they could air It; isn't an easy task Anne their own • feelings and has undertaken. The Rotary Club and 'many of the parents are planning to help get it. going as well and Anne plans to contact other service clubs in town for their support. Where do you find a building to house a program that will be in' operation every day? As yet this has not been resolved so if you have any ideas' let Anne Knox hear from you. It was suggested to use the old A&P store, which would be ideal. However.. ft is owned i3riyately by someone out of town. - A letter will be sent out to,. the children, themselves, to get their ideas of what they would like to have and be able to do. The program will be for the kids and set up mainly- by the kids. There will be a couple of adults there but their role will be just for guidance and help when needed along with a phone in case they should need assistance for anything. It was. suggested that the kids could, find old tables and chairs and paint and decorate them yin their own ways. This way the kids would take more of an interest and respon- sibitity in the program. There are unlimited things the kids could get involved in. They could •have speakers come in, find out how to do different .crafts and hobbies and have a musical in- termission with the kids bringing their own in- struments and providing ,,QUARE, art a a goderich to When ' 1°1111' GODERICH . visit ' SHOPPERS SQUARE while keeping them off • the streets and out of trouble. Geor-gQ Woodcock's "Who .,killed the British Empire" outlines the decline'of a great power.' As long as the British wanted to protect the "trade routes to 'the east, more colones were acquired; when India was no longer a part of the' empire, the purpose for these colonies vanished." The Statute of Westminster was the important turning point in Canada's in- dependence.. The powerful U.S.A, forced Canada • to become a separate nation. Mr. Woodcock presently lives in B.C. and teaches 'at U.B.C. Lord, Tihomson's "After I was sixty" is a lively account of a man with unlimited energy and drive. He became involved in the related fields of television, book publishing, telephone yellow pages and North Sea Oil. exploration. Enjoyable reading about a world figure;. November ' 19, at the Goderich branch, 52 Montreal Street, ' at 8:00 p.m. Paul Carroll will lead a general discussion on the influence of nuclear reactors in Huron County. Program will include a film followed by discussion. --All welcome. -ed Nuclear s pens ib ilit y ciiirisent of, -and often against the w'ishe's of, the citizens of the participating nations. "Nuclear reactors for the generation of electrical power are being, irresponsibly provided to countries with unstable governments and to countries. with' aggressive intentions. These reactors enable such countries to divert . the components for nuclear weapons manufac- ture. `;There simply are no adequate control measures whichcan absolutely guaranteeagainst such diversion or manufacture of Arms. "Nuclear reactors are now being built and planned for the future in exploding numbers in Western coun- tries particularly. Evidence is mounting that mischances all along the generation route — from the mining operation to the final disposition of the .highly radioactive wastes — have happened and are happening without sufficient recognition of „ate con- sequences. "The safeguards against - disaster are being ignored by the agencies in authority or the governments in control: "Secrecy, bureaucratic arrogance and public 'relations rhetoric are all that filter down to the taxpayer and, voter. • "Since the proliferation of. nuclear power poses the greatest risk that mankind has ever brought upon. the 'earth, then mankind as a whole must have some place " within the decision making process.
