•r. Satter news Goderich United beats St. Marys B' ( MAME V"ARGA Is we "the Chairips" or isn't we?? We sure is!.! We pplished off the season in high style: we tackled St. Mary's last Saturday and won 3-1. It was bitterly cold, bitingly windy and the boys were "bluishly frozen"! But we Were determined to go out in style and we 'sure did just that!, We may have had "goosebumps" but we wore them with class!! Both halves were great in terms of fine, steady soccer. - United played with gutsy perseverance and intuitive responses.' During the\ first half, both teams tested each other's mettle and challenged constantly for the ball, The St. Mary's goalie saw plenty of action from our persistant United men, but no breaks were forthcoming for this period. United used every cagey trick, *all the savvy and every ounce of strength in their reserves, but we left this 45 minutes ina scoreless ties. Still, we weren't discouraged, neither were we dismayed because we were confident of • our eventual success. And we were proved right! • The.s.econd half was barely Showdown battle today Vikings meet Panthers BY T.D. punt return, the second on a It will be a showdown battle pass and run play from Barz. for first place here today Quarterback Barz, wercte 15 (Thursday) when the GDCI Yards on a sweep and Ben junior Vikings - take on the Wersell ran 25 'yards after recovering a fumble to ac- count for the other third quarter touchdowns. • Tom O'Keefe ;scored the Vikings final major in the fourth quarter on a 20 yard sweep. Needless to say, that started the ball rolling. (ho ho ho! ) United hustled themselves superbly and in double-quick time, "General" Gottschalk created a fortuitous op- portunity for teammate Carl Moller and Carltook full and fast advantage and zapped in the winning goal which gave us a 2-0 lead. Shortly afterwards, St. Mary's retaliated with a goal of their own, only serving to step up United's enthusiatic slaving! ' There was ,no holding back now as Goderich employed' their talents (and their feet) to the fullest extent! On one of the best plays of the season, our third point was achieved ty Brian "Slick" Allen who ha,s quicksilver reflexes and slammed in a beautifully executed goal. -- We played out 'the dying minutes of the game with no. lessening of authority and* power, but no -further scoring oc.curred. So, folks, we walked away from the soccer field for the final time this season with another terrific win. We really 'looked like the top team for this game. I like to. see United use their ver- satility to good purpose and.. they can sure lay it on! Taking top spot for the day i's Clare, "the ,•old Smoothie" Sager, who made some, brilliant plays and remained 'unfiustere-d and cool - throughout the entire -game, (He was cool to the point of freezing! ! , The weather helped! ! ) Secondly, Harold ..Ref-' flinghaus played an in- telligent and well-timed game and was definitelywan added factor in each forward -line maneuver. Thirdly, "the Super -Dude" Dave Graf, who ended up with an injury', played wit'hall the savvy and . "pizazz". he always manages to wit into everything he does.!! It was an extra -special game because United , displayed desire, drive and defen, siveness. We leave the season with 14 OBITUARY T.R.
