These people are merely agents of a world wide network of ,,, uge corporations who deal' in the business of providing (ormdenying) food or the necessities for food production. The farmer today appears prosperous, but he is in fact deeply in debt. A brief la* at some of the farm supply sectors will show what he is up against. Farm Machinery - The Barber Royal ' Commission (1970) clearly demonstrated that this industry, controlled by a few huge corporations, operates as on international cartel. In North America John Deere and Company is the recognized_ .price leader, with International Harvester, Massey -Ferguson and Ford and the White Motor Co. following along. Prices are set at • a high level, permitting monopoly profits. The cost is paid for by the farmer. Fertilizers -Since its in- ception, the fertilizer industry. has been characterized by international cartels and combines. Down to the last decade, the Canadian, industry had been .totally dominated by Canadian Inhtstries Ltd. and Cominco, and they are still the price leaders. The National Farmers Union has demanded, and got a Federal investigation into the pricing practices. • Feed - This is the only farm supply industry where price competition is present Nevertheless, the industry has dominant firms, which are •usually'- intigrated into the,. poultry business and into flour and baking..,. Credit - There are a number of federal and provincial programs which provide credit to farmers, but the federally chartered banks have con- tinued to be the main source. In the last decade the assets of the banks have tripled. During that same ' period the interest on farm loans increased from 41/2 percent to around 9 percent, and is now around 101/2 percent to 11 percent. Bank profits have increased at a fantastic rate, between 20 percent to 30' per- cent. For farmers it is the same old story. Fuel - It hardly seems necessary at this' time to note that the petrolium industry in Canada is dominated by the Big Seven foreign integrated companies which constitute the international cartel , and sets .world prices.
