A simple fire win- ing device can save the lives of ygur family. ` Only .-a year ago a fire broke out in a" basement closet of a very 'fine house in Ontario. An expensive fire warning system had • been installed to rouse the family and signal the fire department if the tempera- ture at any of 15 points reached 135 degrees fahren- ,heit. It never. went off. But a . $59,95 smoke detector erected early in 1974 sound- ed its -raucous signal as did 4 others still in their car- tons in the basement. A little• smoke triggered the detectors and helped save' the lives of the parents and their 5 children. Although it is unwise to specify any single fire de- tection system without Iookr ing very closely at the de- tails of each situation smoke detectors •are steadily win- ning favour with an increas- ing 'number of Canadian home 'owners. Compactly designed, inexpensive and comparatively easy to in- stall, a number of different models are highly recom- mended 'by fire departments. Early warning •.is of vital importance and it should be recognized. ,there. are four stages to a fire situation. First the incipient stage where no visible smoke, flame or significant heat have developed. Then the smouldering stage when smoke is seen and toxic gases are beginning to gen- erate but without tfame or appreciable' heat. This is followed by the thirty or flame Mage wherein the volume of smoke may re- cede as the amount of heat rises, And finally the heat stage where heat, flame, smoke and toxic gases are very evident, You , row have a full scale fire -raging with all its perils to liy,es and property. There are at least four distinctive types of de.tec• 'tors. All perform a func- tion under certain situa: tions but we are dealing with early . warnings for fires 'in , the. home. Smoke- detectors- mokedetectors- are widely recom- mended for this purpose. Thermal or heat detectors as they are commonly known usually only operate when heat at the ceiling level has reached 135 de- grees fahrenheit, while the" flame detector "senses" light from the flicker of the flamesor fire. Both 'these' • types- are good under cer- tain conditions. The smoke detectors, however, are de- signed to become operation- al earlier in the fire cycle. The photo electric type trig- gers at stage 2 and sounds it's warning when visible smoke is present.' The "products of combustion" design, sometimes known as ionization detectors, respond at the incipient or fire stage of a fire before even the smoke really becomes ap- parent. ~ Both these smoke detec- tor types can serve the home owner or apartment dweller well. Retailing at under 580.00 and ins places for appreciably less, they are compactly con- structed, gracefully designed and generally mounted on the ceiling_ adjacent to the bedrooms. If the bedrooms are on different levels two units are recommended. Many of these smoke de- tectors can be line powered, that is wired into household "circuits, others are battery operated. Similar, to = all new appliances, instructions should be carefully fol- lowed. Fire can break out fast and one key to safety is "an early warning," A smoke detector is an inex- pensive investment well worth considering for your home. Make sure it's• listed and labelled by the Under- writers Laboratories of Canada. Toy Lighters are Menacelays Mom By. Peter Clough, Toronto Sun When is a toy not a toy? Answer: When it's a cigarette lighter. When it becomes 'a fire 'hazard, says a Toronto mother whose seven-year-old daughter put 10 cents in "a 'toy machine and won herself a miniature cigarette lighter. 524-8351 Fire Prevention is something,to Think about Year-round... Her son ;Richard says many of his schdolfriends have obtained lighters from the . machines, some of which take dimes and others, quarters. The machines are distri- buted to" department stores throughout the city by Re - marc Distributing Co. Ltd. Manager Jinn McCowan pointed out that the lighters come without fluid. "If a. kid gets the fluid 'and every- thing else, it may work or it may not work. I don't know," he said. "If a . seven-year: old got hold of it and put fluid into it he could, ignite his clothes," said Dorlene Hew- itt, of Ardwick Blvd. Mrs. Hewitt knows what it's like to lose a child •in a blaze. That's how her four- year-old brother perished. "Maybe it isn't important to sone people," she said, "but it is to me." Luckily, her daughter, Dawn, brought home the lighter, which she obtained from a machine in a Shep- pard Ave. Woolco store, 'a ti little disappointed' that it wasn't' the usual plastic- ring or necklace. When the lighter was fill- ed with fuel it worked in- stantly, giving off a flame that was bigger than the Japanese -made lighter itself. Within seconds, the tin cover had started to burn , Dawn's fingers, "MY 14 • year - old son can't go into a store and buy a packet of cigarettes, yet my seven • year - old daughter can buy a lighter," said -,yrs. The Godrkh Fire Depar Every week fire ' strikes, at more than one thousand Canadian homes: I.n terms of dollars that means a yearly loss of below $30,000,000, although the typical hous,e fire averages under $500 in damage. But the truth is that three quarters of all fire deaths, occur in those homes. And not only death, for hundreds of Canadians are horribly -burned and often permanently scarred in' these fires. Fires rarely just "happen"! Nine out of every ten fires are the result of carelessness and neglect. Don't let neglect, and carlessness cause 'fires in Goder' ich.
