award prizes to best entries

The regular meeting of the
Garden Club was held Wed-
nesday, September 17 in St,
Mary's School. Thechighlight of -
the evening was the judging of
flowers and arrangements by
* the members preserlli.
Some of the choices were
difficult to make, giving the
participants ,sorne insight into
the problems ' faced by
profess lona 1 judges.
The following prizewinnerS
were chosen: Juniors, Michel
Madden, Robin MacDonald and
Patrick Madden; Seniors, Jean
Barnett, Mary Carroll, Paul
Carroll, Bud Elliott, Beryl
Harper, Mary HoWe•It Janet
Kalbfleisch, Edwina McKee,
Nancy Pond and Frances
Worsen.
Rose growers in the district
will be interested in the
meeting on September 26. Mrs.
Sylvia Lyzaniwsky, editor of
the Canadian Rosarian and
vice-president of the Canadian.
Rose Society will lecture on the
culture of roses. All the
',societies in the district have
been invited to come to Mrs,
Lyzaniwsky's lecture, as she is
an outstanding authority on her
subject and an interesting
speaker.
Non-members are also most
welcome. Details Will be ad-•
vertised in the Signal -Star and
on Channel 12,
Mrs. Barnett had attended
the Ontario Horticulture
Association Convention in
Barrie in June and gave her
report. The theme of the con- '
vention was "Gardening for
Food and Beauty" with the
emphasis on interesting young
people in growing vegetable
and balcony gardens.
Hill Hartnell spoke of the
importance of plant life to
personal health, Without plant
life to renew oxygen, people
would suffocate, he said, and
modern science recommends
gOrdening for physical and
'mental therapy.
, Pure air and 'beauty is an
ancient remedy ,,for Many
ailnIents; He said it has been
found that there is an element
in the soil that is beneficial to
arthritics -He suggested going
barefoot when the weather is
right.
•IP Jack Haight said that in
Sweden, for every tree that is
. cut down two must be planted
to replace, it. He suggested that'
Canadians plant a tree to
celebrate special occasions,
such Os thebirth of a child.
Art Cole • said he" thought
colour schemes in outdoor
landscaping should follow the
• same principles as -for interior
decorating. Draw. up a plan;
visualize the .finished garden
. When in full bloom.and plant
accordingly.
Keep the landscape
simple and uniform, avoiding
clutter. Avoid sharp curves and
corners in shrub -borders. Plan
the perennial border first and
fill in the gaps with annuals.
Evergreens should be well
watered before wintering and
protected from windlash, but
plastic should not be used..
• The suggestion was made
that gro-lite units or planted
jiffy pots make wonderful gifts
to patients in hospitals or to

sold throughout the community
as part of the 50th Anniversary
celebration of, the Canadian
Legion. •
Goderich citizens who placed
orders last Spring and paid for
them at that time will have
them. delivered thisweek. For
those , who placed orders,
delivery will he made on
payment.
An additional quantity were
ordered to supply the need for
thpse wishing to place orderslat
this time. They may he ob-
tained by contacting Howard
Carroll at 524-7969 or any
Branch member.
In addition to making bulbs.
available to the genet -Ill public
for private use, the Branch has
donated Several.thousend bulbs
for public plantings. These will
,..be placed at a number of
rlocatio.ns, . including the
'cenotaph; the memorial plot at
Maitland Cemetery, the'corner
of Montreal St. and 't Elgin
Avenue, the 13 ranch 109Homes,
to name but a few. ,
Sponsors are still required. to
purchase bulb§ which 'have
•been requestedby some of the
local schools.
As the tulip carnpaign winds
up in October, the local Branch
will have added some 12,000
new tulips to Goderich gardens.
It should be an impressive show
next spring,,

CHESS CLUB NEWS
o The G,oderich Township
chess Club will begin its fourth
season Wednesday October 1.
Over the past three years the
• Chess Club -has steadily grown
and last year boasted 29
regular and five honorary
members compared to 15
egular members the first
year.
The Chess Club is open to
players of all ages ,and is set up
accommodate beginners as
well as experienced .players.
,This..year there will be double
the room to' accommodate the
members and there have been
several rule Changes designed
to improve standard. of Chess
played.
• Chess Clocks will be in-
troduced this year mainly for
the use of the top Level. The
season's schedule will consist
of .each member playing two
games against the other
players Mtn' -the schedule
expanding to three games in
January if necessary. There
will aplso be an additional two
weeks allowed for Level 1 play-
' offs.
For players
considering
joining for the first ,.time the
Club is run basically as follows:
Standings are pstablished on
the basis of win -loss per-
centage. The over-all standings
are then divided into fbur levels
with the best win -loss per-
centage players in Level 1 and
the lowest in Level Four. Even
though each member plays all
members throughout the
season ;each Level plays only
among itself for a trophy. .
Last year's winners ,were:
Lmel I, Charlie MacDonald fote4'-'
the third year in a row,,
(although 'Dave Weary gave
him quite a battle in the finals):
Level 2, Harold K loeze: Level
3: Brian Miller; and Level 4,
Mike Koszycki.
The Club charges $10 a year
or 50 cents a week for adults
and $7 a year or 35 cents a week
for public school members. The
money received will he used to
buy chess clocks, trophies and
a banquet at the end of the
seasOn.

The town of Barrie is now
developing its own arboretum,
to celebrate their Centennial
year, The purpose is to
maintain a living catalogue of
trees to serve as an outdoor
classroom to horticulturists
and to children, and, to make a
beauty spot in the community..
Other business of the meeting
included a report on the
distribution of old trophies and
a discussion regarding the
purchase of tulip bulbs as
bonuses for the members.
The meeting closed with the
judging of the flowers and
arrangements and the
presentation of prizes„
