E. GODERICH 524-91,26 FALL HOURS: MON—SAT DAYLIGHT TO DARK OPEN SUNDAY 12 TO '5 Yahoo!! "The Hollywood Boys" have done 'er again! 'The game against St, .Columban was a real "zing-er" for sure! The score was 3-1 and this hat trick was accomplished by Pete Teie'hert. It just goes t6 show that the Shadow does know! (You ha''e to he of terribly ancient vintage to remember : "The Shadow knows"! ! ) The first half was superiqr as far as soccer goes. United was too good to be true! they worked together in unison and covered man for man,' as well as pulling off somE fantastic plays. For the first 20 or 30 minutes, both teams pressed hard for the advantage and neither gave an inch - ( Every scrimmage and every play was vital and 'our men played firm and fast. St. Columban couldn't get the ball out of their • zone no matter how desperately they maneuvered for control. Goderich was on top of every ,move and also held ontothe ball repeatedly and made several abortive attempts to score on the opposition's., net. Eventually, all this "mud, sweat and tears" came together in the culmination of our first goal; Pete "the Shadow" Teichert was in an advantageous position to receive a pass and reflexively shot the ball into the net from the corner. Barely minutes later, in an'instant replay;`Pete again scored from a head ball (that's using your, "noodle" ! !) and the first 45 minutes ended 2-0. We were a tiny bit slower for the second half of play, but not notably ,enough to let St. Columban gain any form of power on that field! They were undeterred_and kept up a barrage of tactics, and fast -paced checking,' Shortly into thus 45 minutes; Harold Refflinghaus gained control of 'the ball and even with three men on him, (not literally "on" him of course:..: lie "is" heavy, he ain't my brother! ! ), covering his every move, he managed to sneak the ball into a favourable position for passing and"after w heating out these three, 'he encountered two more 'eager - beavers' and still, with this attentiveness from the op- position, he zipped the ball past them and ole PeteyTeichert once. again received it; beautifully timed and zapped in goal No34- " Talk, about your ear. - splitting cheers rending the air!! So much energy is expended by the fans in their loyal rah -rah- rooting for theteam; that they all require Vitamin B-12 shots. regularly each Monday morning! ! We figure it's worth it4! - Each of these three goals was set up by the ingenuity of -Harold . Refflinghaus' and ' with quick assistance ,from "Rookie" Iain Lambert on two of these .... they were indeed "poetry in motion"! , For the remaining time left, no effort was spared by either team ,_too achieve further secure footing. No .slacking by anyone accounted ,for such beautifully performed soccer. -Finally, through•one of those "flukes" (called 'Howie' !) St. Columban was able to take' away the victory of' a shut -out from us and score their only point in the game: In the dying minutes of the match, United continued to —apply pressure and only the Referee's whistle halted their industrious labouring!! This was an exceptional game for us and some of the very best soccer of the season was witnessed in this match. "Player -of -the -Day" is most definitely Clare Sager who performed „swiftly, craftily and persistantly. Clare held down his pos•it•ion with calm authority and never swerved from his objective. Great going, Clare! "Sportsman -of -the -Game" is none other than the. "Big H"! It now stands for "hacked, hassled and hurting"!! Harold is,,as. you must know by now, a Mainstay to the team and produces some beautiful set-ups and maneuvers. He can be counted on in any pinch! "Super -Jock" goeS to the "Blond Bomber" Iain Lambert, for"some super work during this game. He's a sturdy player and is an unceasingly loyal supporter in any line-up. He put extra effort into every move and as a result, he made many plays possible for his teammates. Not bad for a "little squirt" ! - An extra big "Foxy Mama's Special" forPete Teichert who gave us our three goals. He had the knack of .being in•the right place at the right time and automatically took each ,advantage to shoot and score. In his quiet way, his presence was effective and shattering •for St. Columban. Love ya, . Petey! Thanks for a truly great game, United! The "Rowdy Rooter" of the week is Goalie Carl Moller's wife, little Gwendolyn Phyllis; who may be short in height but the yardage of the mouth is equalled only by `Yours truly'. Way to be, -Gwen....I knew you were made of the good stuff that every fan needs on the sidelines! ! ' • The Police Falcons lost against Easy Driving 1-67Yt was a terrific game 'nonetheless because this is a really good team .and our guys held them down during the first half, to leave it a scoreless ite. The last half saw a point scored for Easy Driving, followed by a goal from Riek Fisher on an indirect 'free kick. But it was disallowed on a technicality. Never- thelessd we gave a great accounting of ourselves and produced some skillful soccer. The Falsons play again on Sunday at.2 p.m. against London Hungarians "B" on home turf. Goderich United 3rd Division play's a "homer" "also the same day at 4 p.m. against Grand Bend. (whoopee-doo!) " So, .,come on, down to the place where'it all happens and catch us in a double feature! - We'd,,be mighty pleasured to see ya! 'Til then: God bless, keep fit and stay happy. Tune in United - Turn on to Soccer. °.•. Love ya much, .FORy Ma'ma.
