Record demands

ot sunniter (ays
Ontario electricity users
continued placing record
demands on the province power
system in July just.as they -lid
in June as hot, humid Weather
became the norm for the
'summer of 1975,
On 'Monday, July 7 a record
peak demand for the month
was established when 11,885,000
kilowatts were being drawn for
the system, an increase of 3,3
per cent over July, 1974.
During the month the
provincial primary energy
demand totalled 6,593,933,000
kilowatt-hours, an increase of
1.9 per cent over July, 1974.
Labor prob'reTns at a few large
industrial consumers helped
lighten these total enerigy
demands.
In order to meet the demands
for electricity, Ontario Hydro
drew on all types of generation
aswell as purchasing power
from neighboring provinces. Of
the total provided, 38,5 per cent
came from hydraulic stations,
21.6 per cent from coal, 11.5 per
cent from nuclear, 8.6 per cent
,from natural gas and the
remaining 19.8 per cent 'was
purchased.
The percept e coming from
hydraulic Ujces was down
/considerably fi-orn July, 1974's
46.2 percent, This reflected the
fact , that water floWs-, have
declined in most areas of
Ontario where Hydro has
•hydraulic stations. As a result
the "lost" generation hadjb be
replaced by energy from rhore
costly coal and gas fired
stations.
On July 31, the fifth unit at
the coal-fired Nanticoke
generatingstation on Lake Erie.
was declared in-serVice., As a
result, the Nanticoke station,
with a capacity of 2,500,000
kilowatts, became the largest
single source of electricity in
Ontario.
Annual maintenance
programs carried out in
summer months when less
power is needed in Ontario
continued during JUIy. Work on
the replacement of cracked
pressure tubes in Unit 4 at the
Pickering. nuclear station
continues with the expectatioh
that the unit will return to
service later this year:
