GODERfCH SIGNAL -STAR, THURSDAY

United wins 3-2 over
the Yugoslav Canadians
(Intended for last week)
BY RONNIE VARGA
Chug -a, Chug -a Choo-Choo! ! ! We're all steamed up and
back on the tracks, folks! Good ole Goderich United got
their act together again and we w,,ipp against the Yugoslav-
Canad. ans, 3-2. She was a toughie, rwanna tell ya!
The, first half was' really Urlited's shining hour: they
displayed keen desire, super ball control and skillful plays.
They were truly united; they covered, checked, challenged
and protected the Goderich zone like "mother -hens" ! ! The
forward line was clickety-clicking with precision and
%:smoothness and although there was 'an occasional
misdjudgment, it was quickly compensated for by another
buddy. "With, the able assistance of our defensive players,
the entire team was working like a well-oiled machine.
Lordv! United's a great team to watch and cheer for.
They absolutely refused.to let the opposition get xheir"foot
in the door" no way and finally their frustration began to get
the better ofthem and as a result we"were granted a penalty
kick which was' in the bag because "Big John" Gottschalk
reliably does this chore with super -cool efficiency. So, goal
`numero uno' was safely tucked under'' our belts and shortly
thereafter, Brian -of -the -Many -nicknames -Allen ("the
Brake, Cinderfella, Slick, Twinkle -Toes etc. etc. etc.!!)
tapped in a beautiful ball and welleft this half two up on the
Yugoslays.
With the second 45 ,minutes underway, conditions subtly
changed. The opposition was grimly determined to sway
the play in their favor and this they accomplished,,, to a
degree. They began to apply -sterner measure' and
pressures to assure themselves, a win and they tied up the
score in short order. United was stunned and rallied to the .
occasion, but the Yugoslays now had the upper hand and
,'shot in ,.another goal. Fortunately (for us!) it was ruled
offside and the .re,feree called.it back. Man, you could hear
the relief ! !
Goderich now applied themselves, full measure and during
the last ten minutes, Harold Refflinghaus-scored one of the,
best goals of .the season...:a real beaut!! Thi'sgoal was,
achieved with the -aid -of a swift pass from Tom Phipps.
Thanks for this goal, ys! ! So; United people, we remain in
_ .topspot and we are really happy and hope you .are too!
"Super -Jock" is the,"Big H" Refflinghaus for his forward -
line duties . superbly -carried out and his quick-witted
assistance to his team mutes. Great going, "Harry" ! !
'"The Rookie" '(sorry, kid! !) lain Lambert is "Sportsman -
of -the -game" because he played strongly and consistently
never allowing himself to get flustered by the opposition's
"cutesy" tactics!
"Player -of -the -Day" goes to Tom Phipps whose strong
presence was definitely an added advantage. He played
sure and decisive socc r and made numerous inventive
plays to ensure a win for Goderich.
Special mention .for Clare Sager' and Mike Tafeit who
carried out their respective duties with forceful authority
and produced some lovely soccer. '
The most difficult chore was choosing the "Rowdy
Rooster" ... we've got an abundance of truly accomplished
"primal screamers" ! ! But after due consideration and
deliberation I'll have to admit that the fan who rooted
"beyond the call of duty" is onee'again that "Reeve -with -a-
peeve" Stan Profit. He not only had quite a bit to say, but
even gave the referee a few pointers about the rules of the
game, as well as doing a little "back seat" coaching! He's
truly a well-rounded soccerite... except for, the point on the -
top of his head!!
well, that's it folks! '3-2... a great game with some action
worthy of the National leagues ! .,
We trot out on the home' turf again next week at 4 p.rn.
