A $400,000 revamping project
for Sky .Harbor Airport • was
unveiled at a 'recent town
council meeting a preliminary
plan showing what the end
result of the desired facilities at
the airport would amount to.
The plan was displayed for
Goderich council, Colborne
Township coUncil (whose land
the airport is on), the Goderich
airport co'n1,tyaittee and county
pla"'L1nerNick Hill.
Dave Stoddart, senior project
planner for the K leinf'eldt
Group of consulting engineers
of Brampton, revealed his
company's proposals in an.
effort to give the councils some
idea of what the project would
entail. "
The attendance of • the
Colborne council was requested
to allow them to gain some
insight into designating the
land around S ky. Harbor in
their official plan of zoning.
Mr. Stoddart ' explained ,to
the group that what they faced
in dating Sky Harbor was
fitting' the airport around
present buildings and land uses
with the intention of fitting
future buildings and uses
around the airport,
He said the proposals
requested by the town would
' require the use of all . of the
airport's 300 "plus acreage and
possibly mean the purch.ase,of
about another 100 acres,
The plan was broken.into four
phases to compensate gradual
growth of the. airport. Phase
One involves the construction
.of a runway 000 feet long
running south east to north
west.
It also includes the addition
of one corporate hangar„ one
service hangar and several,."
hangars to house sma•1.1 craft.
Phase Two includes a second
runway ',900 feet wide running
. at a right angle. to the one
proposed in Phase One. Also in
the second stage is a taxiway,
more T hangars, an ad-
ministration building and a
heliport.
. Phase Three calls for the
relocation of the 3,800 foot
runway now -in existence, more
taxiways and T. hangA and. a
clubhouse.
The final phasZ is the ad-
dition of the runway con-
structed: in the second stage to
5,000 feet.
Mr. Stoddard told council
there was no pressure of time
limits, .with this plan. He
pointed out it gave the town two
„ 5,000 foot runways as_, requested
but that the plan 'was .still
subject . to the Ministry of
,T'ra'nsportation approval.
Dick Wright,,.a,member of the
airport development 'com-
mittee, told the councils that
the plan for Sky Harbor might
restore.some of the lost glory to
'the once busy airport. He said.
that` the )paint shop .operated
there draws:customers from all
over the continent and that
combined with the now defunct
radio sales store and service
centre, once made Sky Harbor
as busy or busier in air traffic
than the' Kitchener -Waterloo
airport: • -
"This plan is ideal for STOL
(short take'' off and landing)
aircraft that are becoming
more popular, is sufficient for
commercial aircraft and if the
weather conditions were right
might even allow a DC9 to
squeeze in," said Mr, Wright.
The plan was not complete
with facts and figures involving
any traffic counts now , or
predicted. and entailed no
estimation' of the impact the
development would have on
future and present land uses in
the area,
County planner Nick Hill said
he did not object to the airport
expansion in principle but that
he was interested in what it
would mean to the people who
live in theomobile home park at
the west end of the main 'run-
way.
"I don't have the information
to respond professionally to this
proposal and I find that
frustrating," said' the planner.
"But in the light of Colborne's
official plan which is being
drafted now I would be most
interested in the facts that go
along with the expansion,"
Lloyd Atfiefd, also a member
of the airport committee, ex-
plained. to couflcil that the. new
runways would probably not
mean a change in the operating
hours the airport has now.
He said that the facilities
would allow for more air traffic
but that' traffic would still be'
primarily small craft arid
would still be in the daylight
hours.
Colborne deputy -reeve
Norman Durst told council that
he was quite prepared to see
zoning around the airport to
"permit the development. He
said it is difficult to move an
airport from place to place
when planning just because
something is there that doesn't
belong. He said ,,the area
