Recently I saw on TV channel
12 the weekly prdgram of the
Sunday Bands Preview at the
time that Bob Henry was guest
of honor.
Don McMillan, Bob,, Arn.
McConnell, Harry Worsen and
Jim Peters all had their turn in
telling their experiences - and
most of them were too shy - or
something - to tell very much.
But it was interesting, anyway,
especially' if you knw• some of
the background of the Goderich
Bands.
I was especially pleased to
hear Bob Henry and Bob has
SO much he can tell but he IS
the shy one and TV can make
anyone tongue-tied.
gob has been - playing the
trumpet since he was a ypung
teener. He will be 75 in_October
and he can still play a fine tune.
As Don McMilla-n•'-°wh•o•-has
become a great bandsirran,
himself - says, he, as- a small
boy, would sit and just hold his
breath as Bob played the LAST
POST - (which brought tears to
everyone's eyes) for over 2.3
years at each Remembrance
Day. He had such control yogi
could sing with his playing -.
(not un .Remembrance Day)
and the notes were so sweet and
clear --what a p'ty the young
people of NOW ca"hnot enjoy .,
this man's Music.
. But • then, we have others -
coming along -Don McMillan's
son, Ernie, . plays a sweet
trumpet, too, and; he is.. still a
youngster. Let's hope he will
carry on, with this.. fine in-'
strument.
.. Besides' being a talented
musician Bob was an ardent
and: expert photographer - and
he was just a youngster when
he started with the Signal with
Mr, W.H. Robertson the Editor'
and Manager.
Well now - I didn't intend to
write a' biograc on Bob - (I
wish someone would) mainly I
wanted to• point out that
Goderich has had many ' ex-
- cellent bands down thru' .the
years, even an ' outstanding
Girls' band and other great
competitions winners. •
I would like to hear Art Curry.
or George Jenner or anotherof
the older ,members tell us more
about, these bands. • W e are
fortunate, to have people' like
Don and Jim Peters and a few
others who are trying to
establish the reputation of
Goderich, once again, .for top
rating hands.
I hope. when these fellows
need help., wwitri this worthwhile
project you will be there to help
them carry on —, even if it is
only with a few dollars .and
these arcs always a big need.
The Taylors' . Corners
Community 'have their Bazaar

Mark your calendar as they
always have a lovely salad

it there at McKay Hall: the
country goodie's are just lovely
and their bazaar is terrific. So.

Not so far ahead' —, Sep-
tember is the Knox Church

your donations ready and take
them over on the Friday nite,
Last week on our front page
you read that Lee Ryan and
"'Mike Mallough had won gold
medals at the Summer Games
in Lawn Bowling Competitions
held'inLondon.
The boys didn't realize these
competitions, were being
conducted like the Olympic
Summer Games. Had they worf
in the Provincial Playdowns
earlier, they might ,now have
been playing ,.irl British
Columbia against the . top
howlers from each province.
They had lost at that time by
a very small margin and had
enjoyed the thrill of good
competition, but didn't expect
the,;;," royal treatment they
received by being runners-up.
1'his...is the first year for the
well deserved threatment of
these people by the Provincial
Lawn Bowling Association - a
game as old or older than the
game of golf - and just as ex-
citing. '
Another thing Mike men-
tioned was that they were
thrilled to see so many young ,
people. in the game -those who
had competed for honours in
the COLTS division.
As far. as' I know there is no
special class for the- girls of
sixteen and oyer so perhaps we
'might encourage more girls to
Way the - what I°like to think of
as - OUTDOOR curling. Lawn
howling is THAT competitive
and exciting, youngpeople are
now realizing tha-t ike tennis it
is a great game to revive.
The local club has a fine lot of
new Membersin.the last,year
with a good group ..of Senior
Citizens -enjoying the game, We
would still like to see more
young people take up this game
' whoknyvv it torr night reach `"

• With the Fall weather we look
to , ournewform of en-
tertainment and occupation,
There are lots and lots of things.
to do for entertainment but
some need an OCCUPATION.
d'Now there are others who are
in need of help in a. different
way - the ailing and the older
ones w hp can't' D0' for t.heM1
selves who need help in their
home or meals provided.
,The Meals on Wheels have
done a great service and a
great-, many .appreciate. this
but some are taking advantage
of this service some who could
well afford to pay for this meal •
and service. I know they pay a
little for' the lovely meal they
receive and for riost of the
people receiving the meal it is
all they can afford., .
BUT there are a few width
plenty in the bank - as one lady
told me, who are well able to
GIVE for this service and why
should she run her°legs off and
pay for gas taking meals to
these offenders. '
I can, see her point and I think
in order to keep this program
'rolling the ones who are.,taking
adVantage of these volunteers
should, before they'are sought
out, pay Well for' this service. '
What d6YOU think?.- •
