Not long ago, in the hot"
weather,, I wakened with the
birds - 4 :15 a. m. - what a time of
day to become wide awake. No
luck trying to sleep again, so
about five in the dull morning I
dressed and headed the car
towards the Harbor.
,The big old Algorail was
arriving and away beyond the
breakwalls I could see another
ship - its searchlight switching
back and forth.
I watched' the three, "Little
Toots" turn the big ship in the
basin, and soon some young
men were being swung over the
side to secure the lines and
snug the ship in tightly to the
wharf.
It is always a treat to see
these Lakers. being turned
about in that basin. Usually
there are a great many others
watching this too, but at 5 a.m.?
I WAS alone.
I headed for the !south. pier
and found it was the smoky old
iitedger that had been following
the Algorail. I can rettember
watching the stream of black
smoke pouring out of the trains
and enjoyed seeing the shapes
as it disintegrated into the
atmosphere. Now I hate it and
it frightens me.
My 'granddaughter Heather
had told me about a,one-legged
gull she had. watched at the
beach -- and there he was, hop,

Colborne ball team
wins big tourney
Owing to the wet field con- 0
at Hully Gully on
Labour Day, the first annual
Farmer' Boy Tournament was
diamond. ,
Stanley :Township boys
started off strongly against
Goderieti Township and built
steady pitching of "A lfie' '
Taylor, who also had the best
hit of the day, a homerun over
the left field lence. Danny
Taylor went in tb pitch for
Stanley in thq last inning with
John Hoggarth ' going the
distanee for Goderich Town-
ship. This game ended in a 11-i:
win for StAnley.
The second ganie was a
heart -breaker for the Hullett
boys who' V/ erQ leading the
'strong Colborne clUb by an 8-5
score gbing into the bottom of
the seventh. with the Howatt
boys and Steve Reid coming ug
with key hits: However, with
one out away from a win, a
"costly' fielding error allowed
Colborne to score two unearned
runs and win the game 9.8.
This left Stanley' and
Colbq.rpe the two winners to do
battle for the T.B. Allen trophy.
Colborne had the momentum
going for them from their
' previous win and had built up a
10 to 0 lead by the end of the
third inning.
Stanley sent Danny Taylor in
to relieve d'Alfie" .who had,
pitched so well in the first gairie
but were unable to catch up and
were trailing 16. to,,5 at the end
of the.: sixth. John Coleman
'pitched the final inning for
Stanley with no better luck,
• Much credit for -the -win -can
go to John Bogie, the big pit-
cher for .Colborne who were
deserving winners of the T.B.
Allen Trophy. .VVilliam Taylor
and Ross Whittaker did a fine
job of umpiring these games
and the boys deserve a hand for
playing three finqall games,
Mullett -dal Stanley t.have
come ,a -long way since spring
as this is their first year in
organized ball: the other two
townships having been
organized longer.
