The first deed conyeyiniti•tle . The document was completed to land in Huron County was in Toronto by Hoh. William issued on January third, 1835- Allan and Thomas' Mercer 140 years ago. The party of the Jones, "attorneys" for the first part, of course, was the Canada Company.. Jones had Canada Company, owner of the not at that time moved up to Huron Tract, and the purchaser ` Goderich as commissioner. was Robert Graham Dunlop, One of the witnesses to the the first registrar of deeds. He deed Was John McDonald, acquired Lots 16 to 19, in- deputy provincial surveyor, also described as of 'Toronto, which needs a bit ° of ex- ; planation we are not likely to get. John must have been in Goderich most of his time. , The deed was recorded "for" Captain Dunlop by James Hamilton, deputy registrar. It is a little folded sheet of par- chment, brown with age;`and is marked "Lib. A, Folio 1," testifying to its seniority. ; As to why our first registrar, brother 'of the "Tiger," .desired four 100 -acre lots in Hullett, one guess is as good as another; or maybe even better..He wanted them.enough to pay 250 pounds sterling, or about.$1,215 at that time, The . settlement at Van- derburgh's Corners was four years old, but gave no promise of spreading to Con. 3. In any case, Dunlop held the lots only to December 10 of the same ,year.:before returning them to the Canada -Company, which resold to settlers. • Lot 15; not included in the transaction, is shown in the Belden Atlas as divided, with a church at the .property line. Lawson. No. 17 was bought in 1854 by James Ginn, and the family name is connected therewith for a century. Lot 18 was leased for some year$ to Richard van Egmond,, after which John UpshalF owned it, followed by Isaac Ra,rtenbury, -Goderich Gh telman, and in recent years ordon . MacDonald. Apparently land was sold from all these lots to the Queen in the right of the Province of Ontario, and in some cases to H.E .P.0 ., the Hydro Com- mission. , Ontario Government pur- chases probably were in con- nection with the Hullett swamp development. Wm. S. Storey on Lot 19 sold land to Hydro in 1973. • • Several years before Dunlop bought the lots in Concession 3, settlement had taken place on Con. 1, east of Clinton, and there we find such familia?' names as Dale, van Egmond, Helmer, Rattenbury, Ransford -and Gibbirtgs-In Con. 2, among the early owners were Dale, McMichael, Fowler and Fingland. There werte settlers in Goderich township, Colborne, McKillop and Hullett as early as 1832, and presumably they received some sort of docurnentary evidence from the Canada Company office ib Goderich as to their leases, but head office in-Tdronto issued the first Heed in, 1835, as here set forth, and registration did not take place until several years later. John Galt conducted his first registry office in a Quebec Street house. Site of the present building was bought by the county in 1868.
