Great progress has especially been made in the last century, Several wheeled vehicles'and engines are on -display at • the" Huron County 'Pioneer Museum, Several have raiher strange uses and others are downright surprising. ' In•a corner on the first floor is a 1919 Cleveland caterpillar. Because the tire was the last automotive breathrough; and caterpillars have only steel treads, this cat almost looks like it was made yesterday. The only things that, give it a'wa'y are its rigid Seat and wooden bumpers. • • , In. a row adjacent to the locomotive, there stand several powered, vehicles. Not the least meaningful of these is the first gas tractor•in Huron County. It was modified from a Stickney 7 horsepower stationary engine. The chassis is made of wood,, and it. operated on a belt drive. The wheels 'are spoked -wood with iron rims. J.H. Neill, original curator of the museum, 'owned and operated it 40 years before donating it, Right next to it is a Hart -Parr 16-30 hp. gtfs engines tractor. It has 'a -wooden floorboard, with steel flanged wheels and steel rims. As in the tradition' of all fine' machines of its day, it has a hood ornament on the front. One of the more ,unusual machines i.s the Happy Farmer gas•tractor of 12-14 horsepower. All engine parts are located within three feet of the ,steering wheel, including the gas tank. It looks very unbalanced. The battery is mounted on top of the wheel guard and needs to he'cranked. One' device that requires .both steam and gas power to work effectively is a 1915.27 hp. gas engine. It was pulled behind a steam engine and used for thrc'shin.g and other TURNER - We wish to express power needs around the farm. d, our thanks • to friends, relatives One of the stranger looking contraptions in that particular, and neighbors. special thanks to display is a water tank to supply the thresher, ft is .all our family in making our 45th wood, except for nuts, bolts, tires and' the like. It looks wedding annis•ers;,ar•y such a___ rather roughly hewn, aav although it must he hen fairly happy and -won to"r'fuf-occasion' watertight. It had to he pumped manually, and the. water Bob & Isr>hel Turner, Auburn. would flow through a three-inch rubber hose. -35 Two railway vehicles ,are on display dwarfed by the locomotive. One of them looks like a fat bicycle, until you, realize that it has no steering It is ridden seated', and there is no danger of falling off, since there is an outrigger- kc eping the drivel' on both rails; It is propelled by pumping the arms and legs hack and forth. 1t was very difficult to drive long. distances. and was more trouble 'than it was worth to drivt' ' uphill', BAXTER - 1 would likc.to thank Dr, Jackson, nurses and staff• of Goderich• llospital, Dr. Sharp, nurses .and staff of University Hospital, those who visited or sent cords while I •gas a patient, Lawrence Baxter. -35 THIS WEEK'S Winners 'CLUB NO. 4 MRS. It criuld he operated best by two men, since the brakes iare foot pow .°red'and about four feet apart. It was used around here during the construction of the West Shore,Railway in 191'2 r - ' Among the several antique steam engines is one monster. It was operated by one roan, and had a„boiler e' c'reight feet long. The whgels were five feet tall, It wars used for thrreshing grain around the farna, and generated up to 22 hp. Along side' this giant is the only engine there withan upright boiler, It was built byWaterman s of Brantford, and dates back to 1871. 1t was owned anal" operated until 1951 when it was donated to the museum. It had to he pulled by horses from place to place ;Ind' .\;wa,5 used again mainly for, threshing grain. The seat is unusually placed at the front and the smokestack is right at the hack. Clain9ed to he the roost durable gas engin( ever made, the Fordson tractor is still quite c.ommCr5. One on displaytas almost all original Darts except tires and wheels, which were steel. It never left the farm it was used on, and was used 4Q years. It dafes back to 19 LT A very unusual machine is a stuinp and rock lifter, Used by the early inhabitants of Hunan, it aided immensely the process of land clearing. Its lifting' capacity was a tremendous 4-5 tons Using a wheel hoist, one team of horses will do the work of ten teams on a straight draw. Adjacent to the stump puller is a more modern wheeled exhibit, a 1935 Chevrolet Coach Car. It was bought by the museurrt in the fall of 1966 for the paltry sum. of $35. Since then. the staff has reconditioned the car excellently, Inside the car, it is interesting to note that the dashboard has but -three meters, 'i'he last, but certainly not the least 'noteworthy, •is a 1926 Chevrolet fire engine. It was used for many' years,"by the 'Clinton Fire Department, Standard equipment on this beauty included a crank siren, a heed -mounted searchlight, 'four ladders, extra -long running boards, a pump and cornpressor inside and no windshield. - 'The vehicles and machinery mentioned above are all on public display at the Huron County Pioneer Mufiertxmwhere there's always something new that's old.
