GoderichUiiited loses
4-3 to Oakridge squad
Hand me .another box of tissues, folks!! Another game •
down the tubes : lost by a score of 4-3. Some "bummer", eh?
In the beginning of the first half, we were up 2-0. Brian
"Fleet Foot" Allen, had scored these two beauties (with
some tremendous back-up from the team) and we figured
this as a good -omen. Phooey on good omens! ! Oakridge
rallied sufficiently to leave this half safely theirs at 3-2:---'•-,
(They, sure stomped on our egos!)
We really hustled (or tried to) in the last 45 minutes to
regain our prior^ firm footing. (To pun or not t:':hat is
the question!) Oakridge was not about to let this game fide
by them and they further established their securit by
placing another goal in our net. United was slowly co ing
• apart at the seams; o desirecwa stherebutlteamut solidit owes,
no challenging. y
not and when the united front has disintegrated, no single V
player can accomplish the work, of the other ten.
During 'the remaining minutes of this half, we Uere
warded a penalty kick (long coming!) and with hopes high,
watched ' as "Big" John Gottschalk placed the ' ball
squarely it net. United's efforts doubled to at least retrieve
some ground to tae up the game, but this idea was swept
away with the soundier 5t the 'referee's whistle, Doom! !
And Gloom! !•! ,
So, people we are unhappy with this state of affairs and we
shall now fight like crazy to keep our top position in the
league standings, There's work to be done and by golly, •
.r, we're gonna work our little ..,,,. legs off ! ! !
The Police Falcons lost again also; with the exact same
score as 3rd's: 4-3! ! Godericih United sure sticks together
through win and lose! -
This game was a bit different though; Goderich was -down
3-1 in the first half and they rallied in the second half to tie
the score. The first half goal was a good ole Gordon
McLellan ``special and the second was• scored by Larry
Donnelly. The third and tying goal was slammed in by Brian
MacKenzie. We had .a. few guys playing with injuries
(troti'pers one and all!) and only ten in the lineup, yet these
fellas played to the hill and their earnest} -.desire was very
apparent and allowed them to retrieve enough ground to
give the London Hungarians 'B' quite a match!
Ili the final seconds of the game the opposition scored the
'-'last goal of the day to take'the game -,.but the Police Falcons
at werethe big winners in spite of this. They worked hard and,
steadily and despite their aches and pains, asked for no
quarter and gave none.
"Player -of -the -day" is Larry Donnelly who played with
genuine "savvy" and worked like a demon! "Sportsman -of -
the -game" is Wayne "the train" Sheardown: he played all-
out solid soccer and he covered the turf .(and his man)' with
Wayne like doggedness! ! Way to be, 4th! Neither team
plays next weekend. •
The weekend of •September 6th, the 4th Division plays in '
London against the Olympians 'B' at 4:00 p.m. On Sunday
they again play the Olympians (re -scheduled game) at 2:00
p.m. at home. The United 3rd play also on Sunday at home
against the Yugoslav -Canadians at 4:00 p.m.' Come on out
y' all: to see us is to love us ! !
Tune in United and turn on to soccer.' God.bless, keep fit
' and stay happy.
