Gary Doak again signs
Boston Bruins contract-
• ,o
to Mery Witter
Her 1 Is, folks! Back in My comfortable corner and just
rarin' to go! Hope you missed hearing all the United news
and stuff 'cause we've been keeping busy and I'd like to
share some of the goin's on with you! A few of thefellas are
on holiday and missed last week's Soccer Tournament in,
Clinton.
It was strictly a fun day and's° we amalgamated 3rd and
4th Division players and got down to it! We lest the first
game; tied the second and won the third. So -it was "one of
each" for United. We like lots of variety,..other-
wise...boring ! !
Now, down to business.. .and serious it is. We played St:
Mary's Spartans on Sttpday and tied that game 3-3. So we
remain undefeated and Still in the 'lead. Too bad we didn't
get it -together and play Well, 'cause we could've walked all
over "ern Was one of those games where anything you try -
e goes awry, and everywhere you go - there's a "Joe' t!
As seems to be tbe case 9 times out of 11); the opposition set
the pace and laid the challenges and made the aggressive
moves for the ball. United kept up okay, but • lacked that
certain spark that inspires- them to perform with flair and
unity. St. Mary's covered our guys and checked them out,
throwing out the challenges right and ,left. United reboun-
ded, but never seemed to gain any sufficient ground until
Brian Allan popped in a beautiful goal and started the ball
. rolling., (terrible pun!)
Shortly afterwards, St. Mary's tied the game and United
had to pia out some "moxie" and get us another goal. Up to
this point, Tony Van Dongen had been "laying the heavies"
,on the opposition and making efficient and inventive plays.
His desire Paid off when he scored a fantastic goal and
turned the game in our favouronce again. .
It was harder to say who was more excited;, the fans or
Tony!! He nearly turns himself inside out during a match to
,keep United on the ball, (another cute pun!) and in the lead.:
With the remainder of the first half practically-bver, neither
team did too much moreomtil half-time was ended and the
second 45 minutes was underway.
• Barely minutes had passed when St. Mary's zapped in a ,
goal no. 2 and once again tied up the game,. (oh, my shat-
4,
tered nerves0) 4
• Shortly after this bit Of defiance from the 9pposifion,
• Harold Refflinghaus whipped a goodie on them, and we were
" in the lead once More. But, Would you believe St. Mary's
• Wasn't having any of that jazz and "once more with feeling"
• , they plunked in their third goal and tied us, up plenty good!
• During the last minutes a the match, United, tried
•desparately (if a little tardily!) to gain some precious
groUnd„ but to no avail; The whistle declared the game a
draw. • •
. I don't feel badly about -tying a garne; ifs•not a loss and
we're very fortunate to have what we have. Some of the
fellas didn't exactly hustle and perform efficiently and as a
result, the game really appeared lacklustre. .
You can't be at top peak always and since it's humanly
impossible, why groan? We'll be 'our usual fantastic selves
for the next game and truly dazzle 'em!!
"Player -of -the -Day" is good old "MightY-Moutb" Gott-
schalk who, was cleaning up the turfz'etty.,good.otit
He -gave out 100 percent and made some terrific defensive
maneuvers. Way to be, Rdlf !
"Sportsman -of -the -Game" • is Mike Tafeit who played
.,craftily -and with "savvy",..like a pro, in fact! Thanks;
Mike! ••
The "Super-Jock!'''aard is willingly handed over to Tony
Van Dongen who played with his heart and his head.
It's pretty tough deciding whom to favour with the
"ROWdy Rooter" because so many of us were rowdy! But I
think it'll have to be:Mery Witter who "shoot's from the lip"
faster than the speed q sound!!
The 4th Division took two points on Sunday although no
game was played. The Olympians forfeited,by a no-show. So,
even though we Were all set for action; we ,,weren't too
perturbed `cause,2 points is 2 points!
Next week's gam:e for '3rd Division United is in London
• against London Carnival at 5 p,m. Pleasetry to come.with
us; we'd love to see and hear you! The Police Falcdns play
it*
•
home'at 6 p.m. against Easy Driving. Should be a good one,
" so' all you l'stay•at-homes" come over and give our 4th
-DiviSion team some tender, loving support, okay??
God bless, keep fit and stay happy.
United -we stand...Divided we fall:
Love ya much,
• Foxy.
P.S.• Extra special thanks to some new fans belonging to
Rick Fisher. Boy, can they rave! It was terrific! Now that's
a farnily! I've heard tell "the family' that screams
together. .gets creamed together"!!
