Farmers in 1975 can expect to pay more for nearly every major farm input. There are innumerable new high costs whichdrmers must pay. , The hulk price for am- monium nitrate in February 1973 was $69 a ton. February 1975 it was $174.00 an increase of $105 a ton or 152 percent. A common nitrogen fertilizer, diomonium phosphate climbed from $108 a ton in " February 1973 to $240 a ton February 1975, an increase of $132,;QQ a ton or 122 per cent. le1970, the price' of , corn .was $1.25 a bushel. The I very survival of a viable far- ming -and agricultural industry in 'OntarioT–'Is-a+--stale,--- _for . ..Ontario is slowly losing its place as ;the dominant' agricultural province in_ Canada. In the future, food production must be at its 'optimum so'that we will be able to feed our- selves. However, the .present situation indicates that farmers are increasingly leaving'. the land and our prime agricultural land is being encroached upon, at an "alarming " pace by, ur- banization., The required op- timum food production will not be forthcoming unless more stability' is established in the agricultural sector and unless society shares the farmers' risks. About 227,000 acres of far- mland are being taken out of production .each year in Ontario. The Provincial Government has no land use policy -that will preserve prime agricultural land.. The Toronto Centred Region - the area within a 90 tnile arc drawn - around Toronto - contains 11 per"cent of Ontario's best class 1 and 2 soils. Yet 'according to present development plans,. at least one third of that land is going to be taken over by housing and other ' develop- ment. A recent provincial 'task force report called tfie Central Ontario Lakeshore Urban Complex report has concluded that the Toronto Centred Region Plan of the Provin. ial Government isP unusable. The report concludes that unless something is' done now a growing popu1.tion. and with a declining land base, Ontario,. may have to import 60 percent of its food r'equirernents, by the year 2000. The Throne Speech, back. in March 1975 encouraged many farmers to believe • that programs would be developed by' the Governrrient to .ensure '' that farmers at least got back their production costs.- They were promised some type of provincial income support plan. However, the- '"'April provin- " ' cial budget which allocated $20 million to farmers for income protectibn and the more recently announced beef -calf stabilization plan dashed any hoPes for an effective income protection plan. If the $2Q Million were allocated for corn growers in this province, ft would provide protection of only 20 ce„pts per bushel . while current poduc-, tion cost estimates are in the $2.50' per bushel range. The recent additioinal increase in the cost ° oil of $2.50 a barrel at the wellhead will cost Ontario farms close to $20 nnillion -more annually. Moreover, the recently` proposed increase in tOnta>'io Hydro rate of roughly '25• tier=. Pent -which. the Provin- cial government has failed to lower substartifiolly, would add an increase of $10 million to Ontario fartl'iers' power bills. Earlier this `year, the Minister of Agriculture had said that there would bea plan for income, protection"•in this province before the seed -,goes into the ground. The seed is now ready to The harvested but, the pro' 'iticial government has not s ee'h fit- -to; la'u-ne- h any sup h--pla t forincome protection.
