"It's a necessary evil." That
is the reply to my question "-
"what is that thick black cloud
in the West?"
Somehow or other I had
missed a few days in visiting
the look -out above the harbour.
Altho' I knew the dredger was
working on the sandbar in the
mouth of the harbour, I just
didn't associate a -t k black
cloud with that big d ship.
They must be, burning' Oft coal !
Speaking of coal - I hear the
price is taking a ridicu1bus
'jump - over a similar one of last,
year: How ' do I know about
COAL?,,,.A' friend, who keeps `a
jim-dandy annex heater going
all winter, bought about four'
tons of it last fall and
discovered it was, about half
slag - or whatever.
Anyway, he was really upset
about . it especially after the
'high price he had paid.- and you
don't sendcoal back. Everyone
'who heard about it was ' really-
' arms and the coal com-'
pany 'getting a black eye.
So, if you buy coal, you might
watch, that you don't get stuck
with something that won't burn
-ata big price or any p'ric'e.
Oh, perhaps they figure
people now -a -days know -v ry
little about coal and -when e
stone, or whatever, was in it,
heated up it would hold the
heat -like in olden days when
you heard of heated stones and
so on? So, WATCH IT.
• People are ,still talking about
' our Art and crafts week held in
July..It was the best we have
ever had, here, but to people
who Visit many other shows it
was rated top§ with the larger
centres. j
We are certainly happy about
the whole thing and. hope 'to
carry it on year after year.
Besides the Arts Festival and
the Kin Karni,yal Week•with the
Sidewalk Shopping Days, the
Historic Jail has really been a,
great' attraction this sumrrrer'
Their tour of fine ' old homes
wtl was an outstanding success and
people are still talking about it,
the tour of the jail is still the
BIG,attraction for tourists - but
I just can't believe. the ' few.
Goderich people who . have
made the tour..'
I still think we should return
to using the old jail - it would
surely cut down on the petty
criminal offences as one night
in one of those cells would be
enough to set them on the
" straight and narrow forever.
Another place seldom visited
by Town people is our museum.

You would scarcelybelieve
' the changes • that have been
made and the wonderful 'ad-
ditions not only to the building
but to the 'contents: How about
spending a couple of hours
there before it closes this fall.
You'll be glad you did! ,
Have you been 'worried - and
alerted - by whiffs of . smoke
every once in a while, lately? A
friend asked me today if I had
noticed it - I had - but didn't
stop to' think about jt until she
asked and in a flash I realized it
must be wafting on the air from
Bill and Alice Porter's barn
which is still smouldering after
\Uheir dreadful barn fire..
Now, don't let this conclusion
sto \you from looking about
your home for fire, you'd hate
to have one smouldering and
uhave•misseit.
This very t 'ng happened not
long ago, in to , where most
of the family were away on
vacation. The one lad who
stopped in at home tilt) ght he
could smell smoke. He ear-
ched and searched - got frie ds
in to help.- but they couldn
find anything and so gave up.
Latter, the young man
couldn't settle down for the
night before checking the house
again and arrived. in time to
find., flames showing at a
baseirtent window. He
managed to control it by
kicking in the window and using
the hose. The fire dept. were
also . quickly on the spot, ..but

Last week I'h d the pleasure
of a bus trip to Oshawa and the
Parkwood Estate. This estate
was the home of the famous
R.S. (Sam) McLaughlin;,
"President of General Motors of

General Motors, Corporation.
For all the wealth, this fifty-
five room residence still looked'
"lived-in' and°'the .priceless
antiques and ,other furnishings
showed' that the, children also
inherited the generous nature
of their father. Oshawa was
very fortunate that such a
family chose - and they `did
choose -, tostay in Oshava'with
their, Carriage Works ."finally
ending upas General Motors.
The history of this transition
brings' in all` the names of
Carriage Works and Motor
Companies that are still
familiar names to us today. •
