With the high price of feed
today, cattlemen can't afford to
take chances on the purchase of
feeder cattle,•_ says Dr. D.G.
Davis, Veterinary' Services
Branch, Ontario Ministry of,
Agriculture and Food. The „
cttle diseases, expert says
there are a nanber of things
cattlemen can do to hhlp make
sure their investment t'a sound
one. •.
"It's a good idea to purchase--
the
urchase-
the cattle as early as possible,"
Dr. Davis recommends. "That
way, the animals can be
' shIipped and acclimatized "to
conditions in Ontario before the
inclement weather of 'fall
arrives." + -
'He warns cattlemen, not to
buy' sick or diseased animals,
no' matter how inexpensive they
are, The high mortality rate
among such tattle makes it
difficult for the producer to
come out on top.
— Dr. Davis advises producers `
to consider the purchase of.pre-.
conditioned cattle that is,•
-animals which have been
Weaned,' .vaccinated and
castrated about three weeks
,before being shipped. He says
preconditioned cattle may' be
more expensive, but em-
phasizes that preconditioning
may save,, animal from
suffering additional stress.
Weaning:Pp vaccination and
castration immediately prior to 3.
travel may result in the animal
being overstressed before `it is
shipped. ,
The purchase of - stale
animals those which have
been in the yards for a few days
without being sold, should be.
thought "over carefully, Dr,
Davis says 'there are usually
good 'reasons why the cattle
have been passed over, and the
buyer should check the animals
closely. ,
