"We'll, purl) up to people who

'Constable Ventham said:
Besides the lack of proper
boating equipment, impaired
driving or -boat handling; the
dangerous operation of a
vessel ; the absence—Of an' ob-
server in, the kioat for water-
' skiers, and -alcohol found on
board -are also frequent of-
fences COnnmitted by boaters.
"If
your boat also serves as
.your' ome, you won't be
charged for cafcrying alcohol
but if you're just using your
watercraft ,for Sport, and you're
found with liquor you will be
Charged just asif you were
discovered with having liquor
in your car," Constable Ven- •
thane said.
He "added that most boaters
are .warned. on first offences
before 'they, are charged. The
maximum fine ' that '.can be -
levied on a water violation is
,$50C or. six months in jail or
both." .
But -in the flee years that he's
been part of the 0 arine detach -
,Ment, Constable., 'Ventham has •
found that people are becoming
• more . conscious df pealing
regu•lat.ions.• Part of- that
awareness, has •come about
• through the OPP boat patrol.
The .OPP boat is placed in the
water 00• the May 24 weekend
' and is brought out on the
hernksgiving wwekend. The
peak boa -ting periods are July
find August and again in late
September and early October
when fishing boats appear on
the Inke.
All this is quite a difference
from ' the patrol's first, year ,,of
operation 'which 'Was -limited, to
weekends and total boating
. hours came to- less than 100
hours. Although equipped to
patrol at night, the boat spends
most of its time ,in the water
during day lrgh'thours.`•
Perhaps if last Friday's boat
raider had taken place under the 4
cover of darkness and the
writer had been unable to see
the pitching of,"the' water and
,p'erhaps if the writer had taken
along the Gravol that she was
advised to arm herself with
prior to the trip the Writer
would have) been left with a
more pleasa t memory, of this
boating'experience. As,, it
happened though, " she'' now
•knows that if she ever' decides
to join the Armed Forces she"l'
'steer well clear of its nava
"branch.
