The major change is that the

applying for special credit has

The Small Farm Develop
ment''Program was established
in 1972 and is operated jointly
by -Agriculture Canada and the
-provinces. It comprises,d,land
transfer plan and special
counselling services to help
small-scale farmers to expand
or move but of agriculture, if'
they do desire, with a•minimum
-of difficulty.
The amended program will;
now also provide credit'`to
persons , currently engaged in
part-time farming, who will
become full-time farmers.

The changes are already
being incorporated into the
agreements- 1•igned between
Agriculture' Canada and the
provinces,
Mr. Whelan emphasized that
a-nyone interested in the
program should apply first to
the nearest Farm Credit
Corporation office or their
provincial extension office.
"Get details on the program
before you make a. tran-
saction, "'he cautioned.
Those applying for special
credit for land purchase must
show 'that, they have the
managerial ability, land,,labor
and capital to operate a viable
farm ' business. ' The Farm'
Credit Corporation determines
.eligibility.
Since the program began, 550
applicants have received
special credit- wh=ich is a low
down payment loan from the
Farm Credit Corporation. In
addition; i' -more than 4,000
grants have been made to
vendors of small 'farrns to help
them adjust out of agriculture.
Counselling services are
provided by provincial
department's ' of ° agriculture
with some federalassistance.
