W• hen one caught fire, it was a neighbourhood disaster. The eam was an indispensible part ,of the con munity, mfirefightingoretso than today. The Huron County Pioneer Museum has a small, collection of local firefighting equipment, dating back to 1851. The oldest piece is an hydraulic hand pump used in Clinton in 1875, although it was built in 1851. Six. men pumped it in much the same way you would pump a hand car on a rai lroad. ` Another .much needed item .wast thetl• firehose reel. It carried 50-75' of four inch fire hose in Clinton. .The Goderich one weighed .about twice as much and carried double the hose. It -took seven or eight men to pull the large ode, so the firefighting crews of yesterday were, quite out of necessity, rather larger The two reels date back to 1860. ' In 1873 Goderich got its, first steam fire pump. It could, produce a phenomena140 ib. of pressure in eight minutes. it has a steam.pump, but it had to be pulled by men or horses, much to the delightof those involved. It was manufactured by Silsby Mfg, in Seneca Falls, N.Y A plate on the boiler is engraved with the names "'of the mayor and reeves of `the town. . Circa 1856 Crediton had a 20-30.man hand pumper, similar to Clinton's only much larger. Men pumped the siderails up and down after pulling the behemoth to the fire, and water would come out at a pretty fair clip, controlling the blaze in a matter of a few hours. All of the above mentioned items are on display at the Huron County Pioneer Museum seven weeks a week. See the museum some time and learn a little bit ,more about the di'strict's history. 6 l New busines opens Mayor Deb Shewfelt extends a hearty welcome to Ray Frydrych, store manager of the new Academy of Musical Arts on Hamilton Street.
