Arthur E. Maloney, :noted
Toronto -criminal lawyer, was
appointed Ontario's first'
ombudsman at $60,000 per
— year.
The ombudsman was ap-'•
pointed to, Investigate private
intilividuals' grievances;against
governmental or local
• authorities. He will not,
'however, have -supervisory
''power over the administration
of justice but will investigate
decisions,,) recommendations
and, acts committed or omitted
in the administration ° of the,,
work of the Ontario govern-
ment. •
He will act in this capacity in
response to complaints from
individuals ' '"or . organizations
and recommend appropriate
action t� meet each "situation
and inform the complainant of
the recommendations. He will
r also be responsible to make an
annual report to the speaker of
the legislative assembly.
Mr. 4Vlaloney is , from a
politically oriented family. His
father is a former member of
federal parliament and his
brother and grandfather were
both members of ' the
legislature. Mr. Maloney
- himself has served . as a.
member of the parliament of
Canada, in . the Toronto -
d
Pa.rkdale riding from 1957 to8
_ 1962.
He has been elected five
times as a' bencher of the Law
Society dUpper Canada and is
chairman of the society's
Professional l` Conduct Com-
mittee. - '
He is a fermer director of"thee

stitutions. He served on the
advisory committee on the
treatment of offenders to the
Provincial Minister of
„gorrectional Services and was
a member of the province's
task force on policing two years
ago.
Mr. Maloney may be familiar
to some. Goderich residents as
he was guest- speaker at a
Conservative campaign rally in
McKay Hall in June of 1962, in
support of Elston Cardiff,
candidate for House of.'Cor--
mons. At that time Maloney
was • a member of- the
Legislative Assembly for Park -
dale and parliamentary
.secretary to , the Mifrister of
Labor since 1957.
The . concept of the om-
budsman has been a' lengthy
tradition in Sweden and acts for
the people as a sound and. useful
protection and `�a safeguard” to
the rights of individuals.
Playhouse opens
with comedy

The opening production on
the new Huron Country
Playhouse ' stage - is
JRAREFOOT IN THE PARK,
by America's favourite comedy
writer Neil Simon. It runs until
Saturday; June 28th.,
One -of his earliest plays, it is
a rather innocent look at
newlyweds in the first flush of
marriage. All, however:,. s 'not
bliss. Paul, an up and coming
young lawyer, finds himself in
:an unusual apartment in an
even ' more unusual neigh-
bourhood. Corrie,' his wife, is
delighted with the bohemian
surroundings and tries to
convert Paul to her easygoing
view Of life.
Her mother, as well,, is on
Corrie's • list for conversion.
Both Paul- and Mrs. Banks find
themselves thrust ,into
situations which give them only
indigestion and headaches,.
„Aided . and abetted by Victor
Velasco, a,- rakish neighbour
this comedy is filled with
laughter for 'veryone.
Corrie Bratter is played by,
Vinetta Strombergs who has
worked extensively across
Canada.. At the Manitoba
Theatre Centre she has ap-
peared in Forget -Me -Not Lahe
and Godspell, at Theatre New
Brunswick she played Louise in
Frankenstein and the National
Arts . Centre in Ottawa savy her
in The Jest Society. Her film

George Murray, famous for
his role of Bill Craig on the CBC
Farm broadcast, plays Victor
Velasco, Mr: Murray is well-
known to Canadian audiences
for • his 'many TV and radio
appearances.

Among the many interesting
displays at the Huron County •
Pioneer Museum is a small
collection of old bicycles. There
are'ten on display'dating back
to 80

1800's. "
pennyfarthing •is jutlike
present day tricycles except
they are much bigger and have
just one -rear wheel. One had to
be. very careful' on a pen-
nyfarthing; They were diffictet
to mount, harder to keep In
+
control and were very hairy
around potholes.
• The oldest bicycle on display
is a pennyfarthing built in 1850.
•It was ultra -modern' featuring
all woodconstructien and steel
tires. In those days, it was the
_ultimate stepsaver. It could go
seven miles anhour with as
*little energy as it takes to'jog:
The next -step" was the wire -
wheel construction and metal
frame. It•-, made for a much
stronger and less , whippy
wheel. Metal also made the
frame sturdier. •
Rubber tires were the next
advance, smoothing the ride
and' providjng more traction:
The rubber tire ,came in around
1870. ,
Someone finally realized that
a cycle with two equal sized
wheels and chain drive would
need less effort. Then came the'
dawning of the age of the true
bicycle. Wheels Were about 22"

made mostly of solid steel rods,

The world's record brook
trout was caught by a Doctor
Cook while vacationing in
Nipigon.: in 1916. The fish
weighed 14 lbs. 800z. and it was
caught with a minnow.
