Mother Nature has her way By Jeff Seddon Once upon a time on the quiet, residential corner of Eldon and Bennett Streets in theprettiest town in Canada there stood a stately old tree That provided shade ,for the homeowners nearby. The tree happily stood at the corner ,as • evidence of Mother Nature's ability to make 'people happy. k,• Then one early morning in June the peace and quiet of the residential -area was shattered by' the -roar' of huge machinery and the bark of commands febiti construction foremen. The street corner had'been picked by the -officers of the pretty town to be one of these lucky ones to be remodelled and the work crews hadarrived to do the job. The tree, satisfied it had done a good, job while the job we's needed, was. quite willing become lumber or firewood but .,,,:.-,4.,qthe, homeowners who erijotred its shade for sO- many years, did not want to see thetree go. They argued with the officers, foremen and construction workers and finally saved the tree • from being sacrificed by progfreSs,,The construction workers .\-.,<'1. were willing 'to put a fittle curve .in the street curb to bypass the tree and allow it to stand. • .. ., . „ Mother Nature had other ideas. A progressive woman at •, heart she did not wish to stand in the way of Progress. She ,.., had discussed the matter „with the tree'and the two agreed that the tree had to become Inmber to allow the curb to be straight and *true and. a credit to the construction worker's ability. . - . . One I'M and sticky night in June, after the curve had been put in the curb, Mother Nature played one OT her cute little tricks on the homeowners and construction workers. She .,‘ brewed up a storm completewith high winds and toppled the , tree leaving only a jagged stump and a.crooked curb. • ' ' The whomeowners merely shrugged" their shoulders and . called the town's works and engineering crew to remove the tree. The construction workers kicked the' digt, said a few choice words about Mother Nature's little joke, and and began to fix the curve in the curb so thatiuture generations would not • ,look at the job and wonder what the wOrkmen had in their -,. thermos bottles at lunch. 9(' Alt 3)Q4u2,220R '..9`(, ,, ' )(0,_, 51.1, t. 74 ,G) •'41- BRUCE MACDONALD ELECTRIC • "Domestic -Commercial -Industrial 133 Britannia Rd. :1 P„lone Evenings 5 2 4.; 8 46 ., The new stamp is..iuppesed to be one of the prettiest to date, altho-ugh it doesn't seem HIGHWAY 1, B4YFELD • • DAILY '10-1ANcit.,.SPEC,11,44"' • QUIET DINING.UN. • • A COZY - ATM OSPlifRE a,.
