Karate, one of the martial
arts designed to increase due's
physical 'strength and self
discipline, is beginning to show -
signs of success in Goderich,
7ust over {a- year old the
Goderich branch of the Legacy
Karate . Club sponsored an
interclub competition Sunday
and placed third overall.
The competition drew about
50 karate students from Lon-
don, Stratfoed, Woodstock, St.,
Thoi'nas, Tillsonburg and Mt.
Forest to Goderich to challenge
one another in kata (individual
motion" routines) and kumite'
(sparring) .
The afternoon event was
dripping with, the ritual that the
art relies'o heavily on to reach
its objectives: The competitors
sit,dross legged around the ring
throughout the duration Of the
event, ruing only when they
Fare instructed to do so. They do
not talk during the kata which
A,
takes about two hours to
complete, each student taking
about two minutes to finish his
routine.
• The sparring, the highlight Of
the public performance for the
audience, is not so, rigid. Other
fighters are permitted to voice
their support of one •individual
but under no circumstances do
they question P a judge's
decision.

petitors seem to he able to

called by the judges because

a punch on kick and struck his

everything. from kicks to the
groin or solar plexis,to punches
to the nose or eye., They excuse
themseles•, thrust their hands,
the floor, 'aid' -leave to get
their second wind. No one who
was avt'arcled a bout because he
!was struck, failed to compete in
his second fight.
The afternoon was.wor-
rthwhile for the Goderich club. A
relative newcomer to the art,
the Doderich,club placed third
in overall school points winning
three awards, one behind St.
•Thomas. ,The results for the
