'Went even further at his Walden retreat than we are" but the
principle is the same.
It is a rewarding experience to build your own house
(albeit a hut) and with your own hand and brain develop
from what materials might be available the comforts you
might want. For example: ,our shower is an old oil drum
mounted atop four wooden legs, the table on• which I now
write was a packing crate now so long ago:, two other tables '
in this room are pieces of board attached to a couple of tree
limbs we have planted in the ground.
"Our mattress was once flour sacks which have been.:
sewn together and filled with straw, the frame of the house
itself is made of tree limbs cut nearby and it is coveredwith
grass and corn stalks.
"Now I didn't construct all this myself, Is Thoivau did at
Walden. I had the help of my Africanzemployee who retains
manualskills we have long since forgotten in our culture and
several that I doubt we ever possessed,
"To keep all this in perspective I should mention that we
brought a kerosene fridge and a gas stove along to our
Walden, but many of the lessons remain valid.. When the
wind blows we eat, sleep.and breathe sand; when it rains we
get wet; when the sun comes out again we sweat; but we are
none the worse for it and in many ways I think the better for
it.
"Those are the real lessons of Walden - those are the
lessons of a little project camp on the fringe of the Sahara
desert in Niger.
"pest le§sons teach us.first of all thag9 ktumn.. But
,9yen more, they teach us what it is Lobe' human, what man is
00 4
and why he is different. They teach us that when we reed
something, a real necessity, we don't have to go downtown
and buy it -.it can be made somehow.
"Most necessities are within our power to build. If we
can't make it ourself, chances are itis not really necessary.
When something break S or ire some way runs amuck, we can
fix it. We need not call in a repairman or buy a new one. We
are human because we have imagination and can think in
abstract terms to develop, the answer to some problems or
inconvenience which might be on our back.
Next Day : The first of next week we start building the mud
brick walls of the barns and I just discovered this afternoon
that none of the men, have ever built with bricks before. They
live in tents and round houses of cornstalks. Certainly I have
never built anything with mud bricks either, so starting
Monday we should have an excellent example of the blind
leading the blind. '4
