The Goderich Signal-Star, 1975-06-12, Page 30'PAGE 1SA—GODERICH S1GNAL-STAR,THURS Y, JUNE i'_', 1975 Visiting boaters fewer at Snug Harbor Pleasure boaters on Lake Huron have been frequenting Cmderich harbor less and less over the past few years and there is no one thing that is re.ponsible. Gasoline prices, geography, high water, docking fees, promotion of other har- bors including American ones and the cost of boats have combined to hamper business at Snug Harbor. Four years ago when Greg Reynolds, now the marina manager, began working at the Goderich marina 1,000 boats came into Snug H, arbor to fuel up, rest or stay overnight but that figure has been declining steadily and last year stood at 400. "It could have been the fuel shortage or the high cost of fuel Get Rid of those Weeds with CeI.L, Weed & Feed Fertilizer! .40 Ib. bag covers 5,000 sq. ft. 11 • 9.9' We loan the spreader free. We: still have a nice selection of Box Plants Denomme's Industrial & Garden Centre 66 Hamilton St. Goderich 524-8761 here or the high water that has done it," remar►ced Reynolds. There are so many ifs in this business it's crazy." It's too early to tell how Snug Harbor will.do this season. .Gas prices have been cut and are now at a par with other harbors in the area. Last year gas was 74 cents a gallon, this year it is 70. Dockage fee's have been altered and . are slightly cheaper than previous years. Last year it was a straight 20 cents per foot for overnight tie- up but this year boats 25-30 feet are charged 53.50 per night, 30- 35 feet 54.50 and anything over 35 feet $5.50. The charge entitles a boater to pump out his holding tank, use the electricity on the pier and make use of the shower and washwoom facilities at the nu►r•ir'ta. High Water levels on the lake which supposedly p+ak last year and+ill be down this year also caused some problems at the marina. The marina manager said that so far this year the' water has been down but the next month will be Marina manager Greg Reynolds checks one of the boats tied up at Snug Harbor for the season to make sure it is secure on its moorings. More seasonal boaters are making use of .the municipal harbor and the manager is hopeful that visiting boats will increase this year over last. Mr. Reynolds recalled times 'last year when the water ++ould rise four -feet over its normal level tht 1 drop uu.%u ►u a toot below normal, all in the space of ten minutes to half an hour. -We would stand here and watch it come up," he remembered. "It would. rise over the middle pier so fast it ++►old wash all the gravel off carrying the garbage Gans - away and leaving smaller boats hung up on the dock," The rising water never did any . damage to docked, boats but according to the manager, visitors riever did like to get off their vessel into two feet of water to buy some ice or fuel up and wouldn't do so unless they absolutely had to. A change in boating trends has had its effect on Snug Harbor- as well as the weather. More and more sailing boats .are appearing on the lake and now approximately outnumber power boats three to one. The manager feels that may make a ,,big difference in the gallonage pumped at the fuel station but . will not interfere with dockage fees. He said fuel prices won't effect travel and people will not have to be concerned about getting a mile to a gallon ,like they did with power vessels. The first two weekends in July will tell the story this year at Snug Harbor. Canadian and American boaters taking ad- vantage of the long weekends will be swarming the lake if the season is to be good.'Most of the boaters that head north will put into Goderich because of its location. Halfway between the Bruce peninsula and Sarnia it is all a power boat can make before refuelling and sail boats 'wilt have one good day's cruise behind them when they arrive here and should put in for a night's rest. The . last two weekends, however,' produced only two boats` each for the night. A busy day at the marina is - not obvious from the number of boats tied ,up for the night. Mr. Reynolds pointed out that two boats tied up is not charac- teristic of the number in. • "We may have some 30 odd boats in here that go right back .out again." he said. "They may come in for food or fuel and only two stay. If 30. come in we're busy." Goder'ich's location on the Lakeshore' route to the north is advantageous, according to..the rimanager. He points out that if people are travelling north and stop here for the night for some supplies they will usually stop again v hen they are returning. "We get them on the way up and we get them on the way back down," he said. with a grin.
