Brindley won the game 4-3. United Soccer News All kinds of awards for' fans and pIayers Our By Ronnie I Varga r.. Greetings and Salutations, faithful ,fans! Would you believe We done gone and won another game??? ! ! Yup, we won 2-1. Dy -no -mite!! ''We played the first round, of the 3rd Division Cup competition and since we were defending our "charnpeenship"., it was appropriate and gratifying to come up smelling like roses.. (well, almost like roses... with a touch of stinkweed thrown in! ! ) We -played the Portuguese "B's in London and you'll never believe this; ' but it was strikingly similar to last week's game! This team was good, but hot-tempered and edgy and United Was pushed very close to the limits of their patience before the day was. out. The first half of the match wasn't too thrilling in terms of skillful play, but for "high- jinks and shenanigans" it was "verrry interesting"! Goderich United played fairly and 'squarely, but they were pretty uncoordinated and sloppy,in this 45 minutes. , The Portuguese team tried to take advantage of this, but fortunately (for us) they were over -eager and over -psyched and consequently, they didn't gain' any ground whatsoever. So, . the beginning half of the game was over (and we'd all , ged 5 years!) with no score for either -side. This didn't h arten our guys but served to make them edgy and more nervous and so they entered the last half gritting their teeth! Both teams .really laid on the heavy artillery and there was bound to be fireworks., (Dy -no -mite again!) United was utting more polish into their act and they gave the goalie a GORDSPORTS 2 tvw hitb ulaivcv in a 'fusing FISHER CUSTOM cause. lave Patterson chipped BUILDERS 0 in with a double. Winding pitcher Gord Riley was tagged fdr seven hits, all singles, and fanned two batters. again he deflected shots from our ambitious and eager guys. After about 15 minutes of energetic play, United was af- forded an excellent opportunity too good to pass (pun! !) and with quick reflexes and easy dexterity, Harold Refflinghaus belted in a sure shot toscore the first goal of the game. Tony Van Dongen and IZ.ick Fisher did some fancy maneuvering and gave Harold the assistance that enabled him to earn this ” point for us. ° Everyone reallybuckled down and worked overtime to Fisher's made a comeback achieve a • win. Now United was really pressed and since time andbaserunner in the seventh but was dwindling away, they put all their efforts and played better soccer in the last 20 minutes than in the preceeding 70 minutes. P, • The opposition got a little "heavy" with us and the referee awarded us a penalty kick. We were exhilarated; this was our chance to take- cdntrot of the game! No such luck, though. The shot was saved by the Portuguese goalie and 'United was left feelinga little glum: , But we're never down for long and no sooner had we tried for a penalty shot , when we were given a free shot' (without the chaser!) and missed our, second chance! With the second Russ Pruder led Sandy's half . nearing its climax, both teams were making and seven -hit attack with two hits in breaking plays like mad! Brian wasn't the only player persevering for this goal - tl,;ere were repeated shots on the net before Brian's, but they just didn't click. Soccer :s part skill, part reflex and part chancf! Luckily, it was our chance and we lucked out! We continued to maintain control 'of the ball down the Portuguese zone (this -pleased them mightily!) until the final d d ! were unable to produce the. equalizer.
