Sunny „skies and warm
temperatures attract boaters
and vacationers by the hun-
dreds to areas along the Lake
Huron shoreline every, sum-
mer. Unfortunately those same
sunny skies that lure people to
the water can ibe un-
,comp-romisingly fickle and turn
a pleasant outing into disaster.
Nature is simply too un-
predictable to depend on and
coupled With carelessness and -
or a lack of boating or sailing
experience and a knowledge of
safety regulations means
trouble on the open water. What
many people don't also realize
is that qualified help is only a -
call.. away and that ,call coujd
avoid disaster.
The Canadian Coast Guard
cotter, Rapid, has once again
made its summer home in
Goderich harbor. The Rapid,
which pulled into Goderich May
14, will set up its operational
base here until late November.
This is the second year the
coast guard will patrol the Lake
Huron waters and the ship will
also mike a brief stay in Port
Stanley sometirne during the
summer months.
There are 24 officers and
crew members who work a two -
crew, two-week system. A crew
consists of four officers, four'
seamen, two. oilers and two
cooks and each crew works 12
hours a day, seven days a week
for two -weeks -Then the crew. a .citizens band,- on_
off for two weeks.
The coast guards main area
of responsibility is the coastline
from Sarnia to Tobermory
which covers approximately
150 miles. From its Goderich
base the Rapid can reach
Sarnia in approximately four
hours 'while the trip to
Tobermory involves eight
hours travelling time, Although
its main operational area is
• concentrated along the Lake
Huron coastline the Rapid and
its crew must be prepared to
assist anKwhere, in the Great
Lakes.
The main filnction' of coast ships," he said. "Our . main
guard is search and rescue. The
Rapid is on 15 minute call, 24
hours per day and one of the
ship's masters, Donald Ross,

conceivably be ready to pull out
within six to eight minutes.
Last year, in its first year in
operation in the area, the coast
guard crew handled 45 calls.
The majority ' of these calls
resulted in assisting boaters
with mechanical difficulties,
boats that had run out of .fuel
and others that had capsized.
Already this season the
Rapid has assisted a ship into
port Elgin after its radar
equipment broke down in the
fog and was in Tobermory to
resale a group of divers who
got lost in the fog but eventually
made their own way, in to shore,
The Rapid is also well
equipped to handle Most fires.
A turbine pump is capable of
pumping:800 gallons of water
per minutrand members of the
crew receive ample protection
from firesin asbestos suits and
self 'contained breathing ap-
paratus. For rescue operation
other equipment includes a
portable hydraulic, jack, a 400
foot rocket powered line and a
self tension line that remains
taught durfrig towing
operations.
CoMmunicatiens is the most
vital link to the ship which is
equipped with five radios. Two
are VHF and AM marine
radios,. There is also an OPP
chanhel 13 and an aircraft radio
on 12.1.5.
- Mr. Ross *explained that the
majority of the calls to the ship
come through the OPP but calls
can be made directly with the
number 524-6141 or through the
Goderich Police Department.
• Oddly enough many people
are just not familiar with ..the
coast guard and thea work they
do, However Mr. Ross does not
want people to get the' wrong
impression Of the coast gliard
duties. •

Playhouse tickets on sale

"Last year we more than
doubled our subscription sales

With the new theatre going
