ANXIETY IN GREAT BRITAIN
The Prospect of War Using Declared is
Viewed in London With Consterna-
tion -Chinese Residents Flee-
ing From Japan—V. S.
May Arbitrate.
Loetnorr, July 30.—All sources of in-
formati4in agree that war exists, in fact if
Rot in frame, between China and Japan.
It is true, however, that the British
Government has not abandoned the hope
of staying farther hostilities. Her Majesty's
Government is willing to go the greatest
lengths to accomplish this object. War in
the .far east would be regarded with genu
ifiekconsternatiou by the British foreign
office, It would 'mean the complete read-
justment of the whole of the eastern' situa-
tion, a readjustment which would surely
result in serious disadvantage to British,
interests even if war was actually escaped
by this country. Hence there have been
the greatest anxiety and activity in diplo-
matic circles here for twenty-four hours
that have been seen since England was on
the verge of war with France just a year
ago.
The Central News has this despatch
from Shanghai: "The Chinese warship
Taao-Khan, which was captured by. a
Japanese warship off the coast of. Round
Island, was equipped partly for fighting.
Although completely outmatched by the
Japanese cruiser, she offered some resist-
ance and lost fully a hundred men killed
and wounded before she yielded. She was
entirely disabled when the Japanese board-
ed her.
The troopship Dow-Shung tried to get
away as soon as the Japanese warships be-
gan their attack and made only a weak
running fight. The Japanese guns swept
her decks and carried off the Chinese
soldiers by,the score. The latest estimate
of the number who arrived here is 1,700.
Only 40 survived the fight. It is said that
all her officers were killed before she went
down,.
"The announcement that the rest of the
Chinese transports arrived safely at Corea
and landed their men is confirmed. On
the 27th the Japanese fusiladed heavily
those who had landed on" the 26th at
Yachani. The Japanese officers hoped thus
to prevent the junction of the Chinese
with the Coreans near Seoul. Whether
they accomplished their object is not
known.
"No news of .the hostilities can be ob-
tained from Pekin. Messages are refused
at the telegraph offices. The outlying
battalions of the northern army are con-
centrating rapidly at Takn, the rendezvous
from which the regiments are embarked
fpr Corea.
*•.y` "The work of preparing harbor defences
'here advances. rapidly. Torpedoes are
being laid in the north channel at the
entrance of 'the Yang -Tee -Kiang. Great
quantities of ammunition have been pur-
chased by the government and are being
collected at the ports for shipment. The
exportation of rice and grain has been
prohibited, The trade is paralyzed. The
•coastiug steamers and smaller craft are
afraid to leave the harbors. While every-
thing looks like war the Chinese officials
continue to maintain that, war has not
been declared."
The Central News says that in official
circles there is a strong feeling in' favor of
mediation on -the part of the United States,
although few believe that Japan and China
evould accept arbitration unless under con-
siderable pressure.
' YolconatrA, July 80, -The army and.
navy reserves have been summoned into
service. Chinese residents of Japan are
fleeing iii large numbers. Reliable news
bus reached Tokio that the main body of
Ohinete troops crossed the northwestern
frontier of Corea on July 25. In official
aitcles everybody is convinced that China's
• -eeent negotiations were a mere subter-
fuge to gaits time and concentrate her
forces with 'a view to combining with the
Odreans for an attack. It is reported that
the Japanese ships have been fired oh

not receive the attention from her that

The suffering vvifreand mother providen-

effected by Paine's Celery Compound.
That very day she procured two bottles of

NATIONAL PRE d UDIOES VANQUISH.
ED. THE TRIUMPHS OF A
GREAT DISCOVERY.
The magnetic influence of gold attracts
the people of every clime to our shores.
Men of all nations, and speaking all the
languages of civilization, are to be found
congregated on our auriferouse
Differing in all other things in their one -
tome, habits, and religion—yet there is one
point upon which their opinions coincide.
Englishmen and Americans, French, Swiss
Germane, Swedes Italians, and Chinese
admit, without a dessenting voice, that the
great remedies introduced into the world
forty years ago by Holloway are better
adapted to cure of dieeases in this climate
than an other preparations in existence.
This appears, in fact, to be the experience
ef mankind in all parts of the world, and
hence the univerral popularity of these
medicines. We consider, however. that
the boundless confidence placed en their
efficecy by the representatives of so many
nations at the mines, is a striking phen-
omenon in medical. Many of these ereople
in their youth, and even at maturity, were
accustomed to the use of Mugs and nos
trume peculiar to their several countries
These remedies were connected in their
minds with associations of home, and in-
dorsed, as it were, by their national pre-
judices. Yet they have been thrown aside
and utterly repudiated, while Holloway's
Pills and Ointment have adopted by a
common impulse throughout the entire
gold regions- There is only one way of
accounting for this moyement. It le the
result of conviction— conviction grounded
on personal obeezvation and experieuce
The:Ointment is rieed with such wonder-
ful success as a dressing for wounds, ulcers
and sore legs, and for all the external dis-
eases and caeuslties to which the adven-
turous gold hunter is peculiarly liable,
that scarcely a digger's tent can be foend

provided with a etock ot this healing,
soothing, cooling preparaticu. The fare fit
a the digger, and sometimes his habits, tend
to -vitiate the blood and develop running
sores and purulent ulcers of the body and
limbs. Bad legs, especially, are very com-
mon at the diggings, and seriously inteifere
with the labours of the diggers. The
worst cases of this class are cured by the
Ointment with extraordinary rapidity.
The best method of healing some legs and
ulcets generally, is by rubbing the Oint-
ment into the inflamed. parts around the
orifice, first opening the pores and soften-
ing the flesh witle warm fomentations.
The part effected is then dreesed with lint
or linen saturated in the Oiatment. Such
is the external treatment, but it s is also
proper to give the patient a few (lofts of
the Pills during tho progress of the cure,
as they serve to purify the blood end dis-
charge morbid matter from the system,
while the Ointment is doing its work on
the surface,—The Scientific Witnese.
