Barbara Holt of the London Red Cross said the turnout was steady but not overwhelming.. (staff photo) Possible additional tennis court discussed b y recreation -board The Goderich Recreation Board ik investigating the possibility of putting in tennis courts on the asphalt pad : beside Judith Gooderham pool. The pad installed for tennis, • has no backstops or nets and Is presently only available for basketball. . Rec board member Lynn. Meyers asked at a committee meeting Thursday night why the pad wasn't in use when the courts at the high school are overcrowded and players are lined up constantly waiting to get.a game.. "There shouldbe tennis courts in the north end to save people going all the way to the ntarioF0fA high school only to stand in line for an hour," stated Meyers. Town recreation director Mike Dymond explained to Meyers and the board that the 'town already had a set of nets but they weren't put up because the courts were used regularly for basketball. He pointed out that dnly half the area could be used for tennis if the basketball was maintained adding that ,when the nets were put in they were usually damaged by' °' vandals. Mary Donnelly told the board that without backstops to catch stray balls, the court would not be used much 'even with nets Farmers fight proposals. for rural garbage dumps Common sense can, prevail, if concerned citizens state their case clearly and forcefully, Gordon Hill, Ontario Federation of Agrictilture president, said in Toronto today. "The provincial~ government's veto of a Metro Toronto plan to turn Port Hope into an urban garbage dump is proof - that legislators will listen when strong,. sensible protests are sustained. Metra had planned to have CP Rail haul 400,000 tons of garbage yearly to.lan'dfill-sites near Port Hope. Area citizens, • including members of the Ontarib Federation of Agriculture and °Durham Region Federation of Agriculture, protested vigorously against this use for rural' land. Durham Federation pretested strongly that they should, have been consulted before the plan was proposed. `.Farmers don't want to see the natural beauty of the countryside desecrated,"- Hill pointed out. "We value the beauty 'of our. environment. We are no more :willing to live beside a.,'garbage dump than are urban citizens. We are especially resentful when a distant urban centre presumes to set up a garbage dump on our doorstep." Farmers, Hill says, are,, in addition, especially fearful that large scale , garbage 'dumps would pollute ground water and endanger water supplies for themselves and their livestock. Environment, Minister William Newman is to be congratulated. for • heeding farmers' protests and acting to preserve the beauty and safety • of the countryside, Hill says.",,r The OFA hopes the proyincial governmen't's 15 -year program of resource recovery will end the. need to bury garbage anywhere in the -province. Manfred Dierolf suggested that the courts could be set up cheaply and temporarily for this summer and if they were used consistently more per - manent work would be'done for next year. He .said if the pad needed resurfacing the town could patchSt and possibly get some old fish • nets from McDonald Marine, to use as backstops. Mayor Deb Shewfelt pointed out that the town would have an asphalt crew . in town this summer resurfacing roads and that for little money, they could probably ask them to go to the park and re -coat the court,. Lynn Meyers . suggested that due to the need for tennis courts because of the increasing popularity of the game, Mike Dymond should investigate all avenues the board could take to make use of the park and report back to the board for action.' In other business MayoY Deb Shewfelt questioned the use of the arena on holidays. He referred to the Victoria Day holiday specifically asking why there was no roller skating held during the day. The arena was used for a minor baseball rbllathon to raise money for their '75 season, The mayor suggested that the town should have priority during 'the holiday weekends. He pointed out that.. the . rec board was looking for revenue and that since they werepaying the arena staff anyway it was foolish to keep a facility like that closed. "Keep it open, he urged, "You've got 2,000' kids wan- dering around town with nothing to do on holidays. You should hold public roller skating. The discussion arose when - the board heard a request from the minor, baseball leagues for a grant for the, arena rental. They asked that the board donate the arena time to save them the expense and allow them to turn the money into, league actiy.ities: ' The board agreed to donate the floor time but requested a league financi+Lstatement to get an 'idea of what kind of shape the group *as in. SCI Mbsk Night set for this evening Al Mullin, music director at GDCI, has planned tonight's -Music Night program at the high school with the intention of displaying the high calibre of music now being taught and played in high schools to his audience. He feels that the 1975 version of the annual evening will be the "best yet" in quality • of music. Mr. Mullin has invited' two school choirs and a band to join the Gbderich Collegiate Con- cert Band for the evening. Central Huron Secondary School and Dresden Secondary School are sending their choirs and the Montcalm Secondary School concert band from London completes the program. The purpose of the evening as the music director sees it is to come out and hear a series of good musical arrangements rather than see sons and daughters onstage in the band. He said people too often are more concerned abou-t ,how .Johnnie looks on Stage 'than how he is, playing. "To hear a 34 voice choir singing in seven part harmony is something else," said Mullin. "I just hope we pack . the gymnasium full ofpeople that want to hear it rather than see it." The two choirs according to Mr. Mullin are exceptional. He said he had a chance to hear Central Huron - recentlyand was very impressed with them. He added that the Dresden choir, equally as impressive in 9z£d U'L5L •CHARTE,2ED ACCOUNEANT 39 West Street Goderich, Ontarib Office (519) 524-2614 Home (519) 524-9640 DIESEL Pumps and Injectors Repaired For All Popular 'Makes Huron Fuel Injection Equipment Bayfield Rd. - 482-7971 Cards For All Occasions • Gifts Books w Stationery Supplies Records ANDERSON'S 100K CENTRE 33 EAST St Goderich . o- 0,7 • GODERICH SIGNAL -STAR, T1 1RS, AY,Y29,1975 ..PAgg %.....'!.1•',.+►w1+'►.raw.'1.R''t!'*NRS!'!►,y?+►'"lR'rr'.f!!M.lS'A,!^ quality, is on tour in this part of the province and asked to play at Goderich. The highlight of the evening will be a medley of hits from the 1890's called Gaslight Gaieties. The. six minute selection will include pieces like The Streets of New York' and 'The Old Mill Stream' and will be played by 102 piece band made up of the Goderich.. and London bands. They will join together playing pieces°they both have in' common and according • to Mr,. Mullin the result will be an opportunity to hear a very "highcalibre" of high school music." "These bands are not a bunch of young people that don't know what they are doing," stated the . director. "They are the result of several years of training in a high school program." The invitation to the 70 piece Montcalm Band was done for both quality- and sentimental reasons.. The inusictilirector at the school, Bill Bettger, is a Goderich boy and former student at GDCI. The evening costs adults one dollar and students 50 cents which Mr. Mullin feels is not unreasonable for such an en- tertaining evening.
