In a game protested by
Dr.mco last Thursday Gord's
Sports opened up a first inning
three -run lead and built on it
throughout the game taking
DRMCO 7-3. The game was

allegedly illegal player in the
Gord's lineup but the league
officials waved the protest and
allowed the game to stand.

first three runs for Gord's with
a double after Jon Ginn walked,
•Ken Vanderburgh singled and
Stan Doherty got on after a
DRMCO error.
In the second inning Jim Ginn
and Dennis Williamson got on
after an error. Both scored on,
another DRMCO error when'
Ken Vanderburgh was at the

performance allowing only
three singles but Fishers put
together a walk, a single a'
sacrifice to push their lone tally
across in the fifth inning.
Fred Pellow was shaky i,n the
early going giving up ten runs
on nine hits in the first three
innings. The Clippers tagged
Pellow for single markers .in

United Soccer News
BY RONNIE VARGA..
.. Hello there, United Soccerites! If you were there on
Sunday then you know how swell we were and if you
Weren't I'm going to tell you how swell we were!! We
"versused" Oakridge Soccer Club and bettered them by a
score of 9-0, A shut -out, to boot! (pun!) Ain't we a '
caution??
As I've repeatedly pointed out before; we always seem.
to play in weird weather and why shOuld this day be any..
different? The day began hot and humid, turning to rain
(I sound like the Channel 7 weathergirl !) and we were
stuck with it. The field is kept in good condition by the
Parks Dept. and they always cut the grass for each game
- but the sidelines were left a tiny bit overgrown this week
and after the first downpour of rain had ceased, the
humidity and steamy heat were pretty unbearable and
standing in that high grass, I had the strangest sensation
of being in the jungle! I kept expecting a marauding lion
(or at least an oversized tom cat) to pounce out and "suit
up" for the mtach.
Well, back from the Safari and on to the Soccer - The
starting half was' our game from beginning to end.
Goderich United played a unified co-ordinated and
skillful 45 minutes. . They covered, checked and
challenged the Oakridge players to a man and we made •
good use of every opportunity. When one tnan moved in
for the ball, another moved up to aid this player's
position, and so on. It was really heartening to watch
United perform so expertly.
Oakridge was an excellent team to play; lots of "go"
and plenty of intelligent players. The starting whistle
hadn't been sounded too, many minutes, when John
Gottschalk started off in the 'scoring sweepstakes and
shot in our first goal after taking advantage of an opening
and came through to shoot a lovely ball in for United.
That's all our fellas needed to spur .them on with
greater enthusiasm and moments later, the "Big H"
'Harold Refflinghaus headed one fantastic shot on net and
the ball landed squarely at its target! With two down,
Oakridge really pressed for some leverage, but no way
would United let that happen. (Power -mad, one and all! !)
Midway through this half, Harold Pga n gained control of
the ball and .with beautiful precision; he •"schmucked"
that third goal in the opposition's net with practised ease!
' Further play resumed with United fairly a-flyin' !
Bali --
control seemed to be the main order of the day and many
team members displayed their expertise;,. setting up'
skillful plays and carrying through to a successful "fait , .
accomplis". In the final wind-up moments of this half, an
excellent opportunity was handed to lain Lambert and he
rose to the occasion, totalling up the fourth goal of the ' '
match! Happiness is.getting-goats!
When the referee's whistle called us to the last half of
•
- the game, everyone was pretty bushed, (back to the bah
again ! what with the constant running in rain and heat,
And as might be expected, we bogged down and didnit
sparkle quite as brightly as during the first part of the
game. We managed .to hold our strong position but
Oakridge bore down and laidme heavy challenges on
us and it was with team perseverance and solidarity that
kept the. match going our way: -
Carl Moller was giveh a bit -heavier workout as th
opposition brought the ball in our zone time'after time,
Carl had made some lovely saves in the first half and
although he didn't deflect any shots that he couldn't
handle, he "protected. our net admirably and was
definitely a contributing, faCtor in the team's taking this
game by another shut-out.•Two in a row says quite a bit
doesn't it? With obvious relief and joy, the ending of the
gathe, created a stampede for the showers such. as
history has never recorded! ,
There was one player 'who stood out during this entire
game:(and that was quite a feat because everyone played
extremely' proficiently) and that person was Harold
Refflinghaus. He was beyond description because he was
'on top of the play all the way. He was here, there and.
everywhere! Harold,is a fascinating fella to watch. He
defies any and all "flak" to do the job he was positioned t
do. I haven't seen Harold play so -well for quite a while. (It
was' certainly worth the wait). Thanks for a fantastic
performance "Big H"
Another steadying influence on the field was John
Gottschalk. His fortitude and unflagging efforts are a
benefit to the team. He gives his best, always.(No half -
measures for John! )
In passing, I'd like to 'make reference to a newcomer -
for this particular game; Karl Teichert. Karl played
really well and adjusted to the team's style of soccer,
quickly and efficiently. He's a born hustler and full of
determination! Way to boogie "FLASH"!
Congratulations,,on this win, United! Mystery; "What
rookie -type person waS spotted at halftime drinking, of
all.things - milk??"
The 4th Division tearri,, the Police Falcons, lost their
game on Sunday 3-2. It was close and I felt sure they'd win
as most of the game was theirs. But that's fate for you!
Gord McLellan and Brian MacKenzie scored. Good going,
guys !„..(note. the alliteration!) They play again Sunday,
:June lsrhome at 6 p.m.
We play in London on Saturday, May 31st at 4 o'clock
against the Yugoslays. Come and see us? Tune in United
and turn on to soccer..
. Godbless,• keep fit and stay hqpiTy.
United we stand - Divided we fall. ,
Love ya much,

The GDCI . Junior soccer afternoon.
Last week the junior Vikings
played to a 1-1 tie with Mitchell
Secondary' School 'in a sudden
death Huron Perth semi-final
game. The contest could be best
described as a marathon as the
teams played unsuccessfully
for three hours to determine the
entrant into the final against St.
_Mary's. Finally -the referee
realizing that the game was an
exercse in futility opted to have
the contest replayed:, . .
The 'Vikings fell behind in
• that first game as Mitchell
cored a goal late in the first
- half to take a 1-0 lead. The
Vikings pressed in the second
half and Ian Lambert notched
the equalizer early in the
second half on a penalty shot
that sent the game into over-
time. The game then continued
for two hours on a sudden death
situation and one can merely
speculate as to the number of .
overtime ' periods that were

played.
