Deputy -reeve Bill CUf'srequest
last Friday when they gave their .
consent to a 19.80 mill increase on
the 'l975`budget for the town. Clif-
ford, as finance chairman, had
asked council two weeks ago to trim
the original budget proposal con-
siderably to lower the 38 'mill in -
&ease
thehovvn faced at that time.
The original budget called for
nearly $2.9 million in expenditures
and council reduced that figure to
'about $2Jmillion. knocking abdut20
milis off the increase which is,about
28 percent of the 1914 budget.
'The finance chairman Com-
mended council on their, cutbacks
and told .fhen0 he was "very
p\eased', 4o see the mill rate in-'
crease down lower than .was an-
ticipated at
n'tic\petedat the last cutting 'session.
At the last session thmnevv rate was
expected to be somewhere between
'2Oand 23 mint over \aofVear.
Public school supporters face the
19.88 mill increase bringing their
total fax bill to 157.13 mills while
separotetchmn| supporters face san'
18.64 mill hike bringing fheir total to
181.78 mills.
Commercial- rates iunnped con-
siderably this year. Public school
supporters will pay a 'tax bill of
181.48 mills, up 26.12 mills over 1974
while., separate school supporters
will pay 188.66 mills, an |ncxeaaeoY
24.74 mills.
Finance chairman. Bill Clifford
remarked that when the *spiralling
cost. of labor and other expenses is
considered council did a vdry
commendable iob keeping the mill'
„hike at only nine mills.
Of the total tax increase 11 mills
was taken by the County of Huron'
and the Board of Education and
town council could donothing +p cut
'back in those areas. The board
requested the larger share, $558,000,
while th6 county takes $351,149. '

In eur/ormeetings, the
company had offered a wage
increase and a cost of living
adjustment during the.,
term oC-two-year agreement.
At mediation in Tn tomu23, the Union suggested that a
general wage increase might
be more acceptable thaga cost
of living clause. In response to
this, the company:withdrew its
offer of a cost of living ad-
justment and modified itgwage
proposal Sccordingly.
Mr. Bfiady said 'that at the
time the negotiations broke off,
the cofnpany had offered a total
wage increase of $1.05 Or hour
in four steps, plus adjustments
for some classifications, while
the Union maintainkl its
request, fOr $2.25 per hour in

The plant manager pointed
out that under previous con-
