Old friends share
memorable event
Thomas J. Salkeld of
LuCknOw was recognized at the
May meeting of Old Light
Masonic Lodge, Lucknow,' for
being a member of the Masonic,.
Order for the past,60 years.
Mr. • Salkeld was, preiented
with his 60 -year jewel by Amos
Andrew of Goderich, a' long
time friend Of Tom and a cousin
by Marriage.' Mr. Andrew is a
member and past master of
Morning Star Lodge at Carlow.
Mr. Salkeld joined the
Masons on February 12, 1915,"
while living near Goderich. He
became a member of Maitland
Lodge there and after 10 cit. 12
yers, became associated with
Old Light Lodge in Luckilow.
He farmed for many years in
West Wawanosh before retiring
to Lucknow a number of years
ago. •
He has been secretary of Old
Light Lodge in Lucknow for 30
Years, having assumed the
position in March 1936. He was
District Deputy Grand Master
in 1949-50.

weather and bustling activity
at the Sunset.
The first Men's Night of the
year was held on Tuesday, May
13th and proved to be a good
golfing night' for more than
forty 'men who signed in at the
Clubhouse. Low gross for the
night was Bruce Lyndon.
Congratulations Bruce!
Other winners were: first
flight, George Low, John Warr,
Greg- Hansen and Bruce
Erskine; second flight, George
Bolton, Stan Telford, Dave
Warr,' Tim O'Brien, Hudson
Warr, Gerry A.,assaline, Denis
LeBrun, Bill McManus and
Doug Fuller; and third flight,
Fred Armstrong, George
Williams, Paul Corriveau,
Harry Williams, Dave Haylow,
Ray Cook and Mark McKenny.
The first Ladies' Night of the
year was held on Thursday,
May 15th. Low gross for the
-night was Willie Lo.
Congratulations Willie!
• Although threatened by rai,
our women golfers braved the
weather and shot nine holes.
Afterwards there was a fashion
show in the 'lounge of the
Simset. The models were
selected from our own Sunset
members and included Dianne
Armtrong, Karen Sturdy,
Mary. Lynne Telford, Jane
Kerr, Jean Asher,, Pat
Pockstader, Nadine Brown,'
Pat Clifford and Ellen Con-
nelly. These ladies modelled
everything from peaked golfing
caps to raincoats and wind
breakers for the not -so-•
pleasant golfing days • and
proved to.us that golfers can tee
off in s'iyle in 1975! The fashion
show was followed by a short.

together complete with lots of
fattening desserts.
The Club Anniversary Party
was held on Monday, May 19th

and once again cloudy skies
gave way to sunshine. Brunch
was served at 1 p.m. and a
delicious aroma filled the
Clubhouse. Afterwards, our
golfers played 18 holes.
Prizes for the women were
won by Joanne Telford, Jean
Asher, Joyce Bolton, Ruth
Brindley, Willa Williams,
Willie Low and Mary Lynne
Telford. Prizes for the men
were won by Bill Asher, Roy
Telford, Cliff Kennedy, Bill
Brown, Andy Smith, ' 'Stan
Telford, Bruce Erskine and
Tom Love. A good time was
enjoyued by all.
Golfers, have an eye for the
700 'young trees which are now
being planted. Throughout the
golfing season watch them
gro.
Well beginners, the game of
golf is a simple business of
learning to hit the ball. Slinple?
Yes, " but infuriating and
frustrating at times too! It has
been said that., the essence of
golf is to forget the bad shot and.
get 'on with the next one, Easicr
said than done! Don't despair.

Sailing course set
for district youth
The Goderich Sailing Club
has joined forces ' with the
town's recreation board to
sponsor a sailing instruction
program this summer for
people between the ages of
eight and 18.
Experience '75 has received a
grant of $2,400 from the
provincial government's
ministry ofculture and
recreation for a nine Week
seriesof courses in the art of
sailing.
The objectives of the
program are to promote
competitive athletics in the
form of an organized junior
racing program, to provide
practical lakesliore op-
portunities for water safety
practices, to provide an
organized on -the -water safety
patrol and to give young per
sons a chance to use sailing
craft on a periodic basis having
taken an instructional course.
The courses arebroken down
into two categories. A double
series of one and two week
sailing instruction classes, one
for children between eight and
14 and the otherOr those 15to
18, will be provided as well as,
classes for adult instruction.
Two sets of racing instruction
are also 'planned. One will
consist of weeknight events for
the younger class and the other
will integrate Junior Petrel
class racing with the weekly
Sunday morning races run by
theGoderich Sailing Club.
Water safety will be stressed
for all participants in the
sailing program and will be
expanded to include other
young people using the
waterfront area. Boating and
swimming safety procedures in
a lakefront situation will be
taught and further instruction
in resuscitation techniques,
rescue operation and swim-,
ming-. may be -handled in the
controlled conditions at Judith
Gooderham Pool,
The Goderich Police
Department have donated the
use of their rescue -boat, the
Royal MP, to provide a
waterfront safety patrol and:
will provide safety equipment
for the craft to help with the
teaching of the safety
techniques.
A system of certification Will
be undertaken to permit all
sailing instruction candidates
to be tested and certified at
regulation Canadian Yachting
Association levels of sailing
achievement.
Ten students a week willbe
handled by the course in-
structors at a cost of six dollars
per week. The long term ob-
jectives of the special classes is
'to operate ,a self supporting
program in two year's time.
