This morning I ' read .
statement proclaiming May
"Family ;Unity Month."
Perhaps to some people the
connection between the
strength of the familyand the
strength of a civilized society is
not evident, but down through
the ages tip family has
remained the basic unit of
society. History shows that a
number of experiments which
tried to- ignore this
arrangement of the Creator
have all resulted ° in dismal
failure. •
A specialist in Christian
family life studies has set down
seven characteristics of a
Christian home; which I believe
can show us the way to, family
unity, and new {moral strength
for our society. I'd like to
summarize those points -here.
1. A Common Faith in Jesus
the Savior_ : When. two 'people
who have such a faith marry
and `establish a horpe, that
home will be a Christian home..
There God comes to live also.
Christ is the daily Companion
and Guests bringing His peace.
This faith can also develop
where it hasn't existed before,
with the same happy results.
2. A Christian Conception of
Marriage: Marriage is in-
tended by God to be and remain
monogamous. Christian
marriage demands faithfulness
on the .part of bothfi" husband and
wife. Christian marriage is
FOR LIFE, and the bond is not
to be dissolved. In marriage we
have the closest and most
-demanding, of ail ' human
relationships.
3. A Christian Attitude
toward Parenthood: Christian
parents regard parenthood -as
their highest calling. They will
give to ,the world sons and
daughters who will pass on 'to
the next generation a genuine
- 'reverence for God and.a clear
testimony to the Gospel.
Christian, parents will be glad
to. raise children who respect
themselves and others.
4. Christian . Teaching and
Guidance: P irectly and in-
directly every. home teaches
some kind of philosophy of life -
good or bad. In the Christian
family, security will be seen to,
come from God's love and care.
A proper sense of moral values,
. and an Awareness. of right -and
wrong as taught by God's La*
will be taught and lived: Most of
all the way of'''forgiveness in.
Jesus Christ will be known,
trusted, and displayed. '.
5. Christian Harmony and
Right Relations: The family is
God's design. He provided for
good order in the home. In the
Christian home there is.,respect
for the 'individual - every in-
dividual. The Christian home
can reflect the joy and hap-
piness of living under the grace
of God. Sincere concern for one
another. in good family
relationships is the fountain of
good will toward all men and of
all good citizenship; The whole
world sorely needs ' human
relations that are Christian.
6.. Accepting- God's Values
and God's Will: The Christian
family allows God to determine
what comes first. It will strive
to use His scale of values in
putting a price tag on all things,
They recognize that the wisdom
of God, the Ruler of ' the
universe, is .greater than 'the
wisdom of men. This gives life'
meaning and purpose, , and
inner strength.
7. A Christian Atmosphere; A'
strongly Christian home has a
spirit about it that is more than
"religious". It ,reflects the
presence of Jesus 'Christ in the
hearts of the members of the
family. Where Christ's
presence is realized and
• practiced, there , is security,
peace, : hope, and a joyous
outlook on life.
These:. are the, ideals of the
family united in Christ. No
family will fully achieve this'
ideal, but it is the goal worth
working toward.
As background to some
family instruction, the Bible
invites us: "Most of all, let love
guide your Wel— Let the peace
of heart which comes from
Christ be ' always present in
your hearts and lives —
Remember what Christ taught
and let His words enrich, your
lives and make you wise; teach
them to each other and sing
them out in psalms and hymns
and spiritual songs,.,singing to
the Lord with thankful hearts."

Living Bible) ,

With the world becoming increasingly subject to

I like to read the story in
Genesis of how God created the

love to read the words, "And
God saw that it was good."
Those words . paint a lovely

Much of what surrounds us,

has the qualities that Paul
describes if we will only see it,
