PAGE OPERICH SIGNAL -STAR „THURSDAY, MAY 16,1975
United Soccer News
BY RONNIO VARGA
Hi there, Loyal Soccer People! Bet you've been on pins
and needles waiting for us to reappear for another action -
packed season, eh?? - -
To begin with, I'm still the same ole exponent of soccer as
last seaspn (tough break for you!) struggling to appear at
least intelligent about this colorful sport. (At most, I'll come
out as frazzled andwitless as ever!)
I'd like to welcome back our faithful readers and fans and
any new interested soccer buffs will eagerly be accepted
with .open arms. There are no new faces on the team thus
far, so I'll leave the introductions for the 4th Division team
who have joined the league to become our alter -ego! I hope
you'll turn out to support them and give them the added
boost fans always bring, especially at the beginning of a
brand new season. It'll give them added incentive (or
something).
So folks, Goderich can now boast of two terrific soccer
teams called United "A" and United "B" (or officially:
Goderich Police Falcons). I want toset the record straight
right now at the, very start of the season; that I
wholeheartedly support the "B" team and think there's a lot
of talent amongst this group and'I will be mentioning their
upcoming -games and -reporting the game results, but since I
cannot possibly attend all "B" games because of conflicting
schedules with the "A" team, it will only be scores I'll be
giving with no rehash of the gar`nes.
I started as a 3rd Division "groupie" and there lies the
crunch: To "B" or not to "B"?? So please, no hard feelings
okay, forts?
Sunday's game was a "homer:. against London Carnival.
It was a .great introduction to the new season too, since 'we
won with'a shut -out of 1-0. Foxy Mama's boys still have that
old "pizazz"!
Thought we'd have a scoreless game for awhile there
because there wasn't a single goal in' the entire first half.
That had to be the longest 45 minutes anyone's ever put in;
the London team was a hard -driving, .hard -playing bunch.
They played a good brand of soccer and our guys were equal
to them and equal to their challenges.. United played with
cool intelligence and plenty of fortitude.
There was some lovely passing and skillful ball control,
and a few United men exhibited some incredible tenacity.
We hit our stride during the second half and .we really got
down to it and hit hard for any chance to take over the game
and score for our advantage. It was tough going because
Carnival was just as determined to do the same and some
strong, heavy soccer was displayed,.
Nevertheless, our Goderich guys }dere, just that:•hit

and durii 1 fifteein miatites" f -the maich; Tain
Lambert took possession of the ball in the center, managed
tooutwit three of the opposition and sent a lovely pass over
to Dan McCallum, who reacted instinctively on, cue and
' • belted the ball into the net to score the one and only goal of
the day! Beautiful play, guys!
The remainder of the match was a matter of holding on to
our secure 'position as the opposition bore down and really
. applied the pressure looking for a break. But no break was a
tough break for them and. we celebrated our first win!
United held on with pure will power and gut strength
because we had only eleven men for the entire game and
with no alternates to back you up, it can be pretty hairy!
Howie "the General'' 'Gottschalk was injured' during the
starting half and he played a full game through sheer "bull-
headedness" and desire! Howie -always plays to the hilt and
he sure proved his loyalty on Sunday. That's "Big G" for
you! !
Harold ReffVnghaus played the whole match°with a head
injury (not soc r:incurred) and executed some great plays
and worked tirelessly for this win. If "Danger Man" has a
swelled head it definitely isn't ego! !
Iain "the Rookie". Lambert played full. -out (and I mean
full -out!) with a pulled tendon, yet you never would have
known it. He produced some ` tricky -maneuvers and in-
credible footwork and his tenacity can never b''e questioned!
So, the "Showmanship Award" is deservedly handed to Iain
for flair and flashiness!
The receiver of the most numerous special awards is Dave
"the Dude" Graf. Here's yet another: "I -think -I'm -
Cracking -Up Award" ! Poor ole Dave injured his anklebone
(again??) and he produced some heavy flak for the London
team and played his usual keen type of soccer. What can you
say about Dave? He's terrific! !
Clare Sager's efforts were unflagging and his dogged
determination helped gain our secure position and keep the
play going to our advantage. Way to dig, Clare!
The "Player -of -the -day" has .to be Dan McCallum who
scored our goal and played ..with skill and perseverance.
Good show, Dan! -
""Sportsmen -of -the -game" were Harold and Howie for
obvious reasons! 4 stars for the 2 "H's" !
Thank you, team for winning .this game. Our next game is
en Sunday, May 25th at 4:00 p.m. against Oakridge andthe
United "B" game is on the same day at 6:00 p.m. against
London 'F1 ngarian "B". Both games are here at home, so
come out and catch us doing "our thing"!
Tune in United and turn on to soccer!
God bless, keep fit and stay happy.
Love ya much,
. n Foxy Mama
P.S, The "B" team lost their game in London, 5-0. Don't
worry guys, you have not yt Legun to fight! !

the area, and hopes to capture

OFA director report from a

earlier. Mr. Stafford said the
provincial government ` may
start "taxing something 'we
don't, know we've got." The
OFA said the government is
considering levying a tax on
property owners for their
mineral rights.
Gordon'Hill, president of the
OFA, said although, this, is not
law yet, the government is.
considering this proposal.
He said he feels the Ministry
of Natural Resources is
"moving ' quickly toward this
type _ of legislation" to en-
courage the'working of mineral
resources. •
He Said this is one of the ..
recommendations of a com-
mittee made one and a half to

the amount could be returned to

Hill said, and from the.'tone of
